Maybe the problems reported are just initial glitches. The November results will include another three months of data.

Sigh. (Reply to this comment)

Small cars should really be our country's future. It's a shame to hear that the fourtwo isn't more reliable and has even better fuel economy than it has. Two year warranty?!?! I don't think that says much for company faith in their product!
Best,

Well, they were designed for use in congested cities. Supposedly the design is very safe, but there's no way around the curb weight of 1,800 pounds.

I'm amazed you would bother to drive one of these. Every time I see one I'm tempted to kick it over and watch it roll. They sell these at my Mercedes Benz dealer in Manhattan near the Lincoln tunnel entrance.
I couldn't use one of these unless it was ONLY in manhattan where traffic is strangling and parking is prohibited. Anybody who puts a Fortwo up against an Expedition, a Chrysler 300 or pretty much any other car on NY highways is begging for a horrific death.

The lulls in automatic shift mode were to me the most surprising thing about the car.
Your review is outstanding--wanted to encourage people who read mine to also read yours.

I was wondering how standardized this review would be, but you really turned around and gave a very accurate take on driving the fortwo.
"But shifts in this mode are very slow, and the computer works the throttle much like someone just learning to use a manual."
Right on the money.
We've been taking on fortwo's since the warranties expired on them a number of years back(In Europe). My own take on the Fortwo's reliability, is that it really takes a nose dive after about the third year. But to be fair most of the cars we see are taking a beating in urban environments and then wrung out on the autobahn. I mentioned before that the diesel version was far and away more economical, but it also holds up much better too. Even with a 12 to 15 percent premium on diesel over gasoline, the return on MPG makes that version much more economical to run. In any case this is a very fine write up and I'm glad to see I'm in good company in this category. Don
