The Bottom Line Stay away from Compuvest if you don't want to pay retail prices for refurbished/oem products!

A few months ago I ordered a cd-burner for a relative's birthday. Being impressed with the brand I had ordered for myself, I decided to stick with the same model.
I found compuvest.com through a low-price search engine. I hadn't heard of the company before, but their webpage seemed all right and I couldn't find any negative reviews of them. I ordered the cd-burner, which was advertised as being in the retail box and including drivers, software, blank cds, manuals, etc.
I received my order promptly enough-- but what was in the box bore no resemblance to what I had ordered. Instead of sending me a retail cd-burner, compuvest.com sent me what appeared to be a model stripped out of a computer. There was no documentation, aside from a generic one page sheet on installing cd-burners. No cds, no box, no drivers, nothing. The model didn't even *look* like mine- I imagine because it was designed for a specific machine.
I wanted to send the thing back. Who wants to get a computer component that looks *used* for their birthday, especially one that comes with absolutely nothing in the way of documentation? On the other hand, it would have cost me 15 dollars to ship the thing back, to a company I didn't trust to refund my money at all, and I would have lost 15 percent of the price due to a restocking fee (which seems to apply to their own screw-ups as well).
I didn't really have a choice in the matter- customer service *never* responded to any of my messages, via email or phone. I ended up keeping the cd-burner, which does work, at least. However, I strongly suspect the burner is refurbished.
The worst part of the experience was that I only 'saved' five dollars from the retail box price! I would have rather have paid the extra money to get what I wanted in the first place- a product that didn't appear to have been stolen out of someone's computer.
