:) I understood you (and appreciated the praise and suggestion of something wonderfully obscure and unobtainable).

Something about all those cutesy voiceovers driving me to reach for the alliteration (a better one than many Manns to maul).

approximation of approbation

Oh, you misapprehend me, bud. That was meant to be high praise. I was just rambling. Don't think I could come up with that many noirs without a pretty good research session. Well done!

I had never heard of "The Last Mile" before. "Requiem for a Heavyweight" is noirish with a good performance by Mickey Rooney, so I can at least imagine it (and he was Elisha Cook/Alan Ladd size). But isn't it a prison movie? Being from UA and not on VHS or DVD, prospects of seeing it seem dim.

I can't imagine you not enjoying "White Heat." It's on DVD, so watch it already!

I haven't had the chance to watch the double-disk Mann set (T-Men/Raw Deal") that you inspired me to get. I like "Desperate" and "Railroaded!" and the chase in "Side Street," but (so far) prefer the westerns. But I know that I am more of a James Stewart fan than you are.

If a movie is in color it's a neo-noir (though my memory sometimes bleaches out the color: I remember Melville's "Le samourai" in black and white).

Thanks for your approximation of approbation and other stimuli to think about noirs!

A pretty comprehensive list, (Reply to this comment)

almost exhaustive, I would we remiss not to mention the dearth of your Anthony Mann coverage, except you noted that, given your obvious admiration for the man. I have been trying to catch up with White Heat for quite some time. Top of the world, ma! That has always stuck with me since I was a kid. Also, another great film starring, maybe surprisingly Mickey Rooney called The Last Mile. Superior is all I can say. Thanks for the links, bud!

BTW, I don't think color disqualifies a film from the noir category, although I prefer the B&W medium also. Great job, as usual!

OK, credit! Epinions does have a band of noir aficionados, and your reviews of noirs have been very stimulating.

Making lists like this first strain my brain and then fell me with regret for many of the products that don't make the list. (My count is that I managed to mention 65 movies herein.) Still, I appreciate your urging me to make this one as only the latter pain persists... and regret is a quintessential noir emotion! (And I have the satisfaction of feeling that I am better at recognizing who to trust than many a noir protagonist was.)

Not surprisingly, the use of the word "noir" in the title has caused me to come sniffing around. Really enjoyed your list and I think I really must make an effort to see Gilda.

What an impressive list. Although I have not seen one of these films, every one sounds intriguing and I definitely need to check some of them out.

"Spellbound" with the Salvador Dali dream sequence and the skiing. Not urban enough to be a noir, though Peck is confused enough a hero trying to recall bad deeds. And a memorable music theme.

The one I just saw was Notorious...:)

Another that I really love is the one with Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman, can't think of the name now......But it's the one where he can't look at any stripes...Damn, this is driving me crazy not being able to remember the name.......

Oh well...Guess it's my sometimers

...top 10 list! I am embarrassed to say the ones I have seen are less than the ones I haven't - but then, this also means I am in for some serious treats!

Thank you,
Vasilis
