I just returned home from the tour... (Reply to this comment)

...of Maine's Acadia National Park and I was fortunate to have a station up there that showed the race every day in it's entirety. It was fantastic to watch!! I caught about two hours per day and loved every moment. The whole team did so well and Lance made it look easy, even as an old man, ha.

The scenery was gorgeous and watching the American flag and hearing the Star Spangled Banner was a thrill.

Hey Barbara, I just wanted to let you know you were the first and only review I looked for, read and rated upon returning just a few hours ago. I knew I would find something that was positive, and it was.

Thanks,

Phil

Len and I watched it too. We were saying been there. That is so amazing, and yes, Lance did a fantastic job again. The combination of Paris and Lance Armstrong will be something we remember forever.

Hugs,
Susie.

Which is why I reviewed two of his books, heh. He certainly deserves his retirement, but hopefully we'll hear of him through books or something. Splendid tribute.

Hey, might you consider having an Epibuddy? Found a newbie who might be interested.

Lance is an inspiration, and so was this review! I can't believe that you can't ride a bicycle. Neither can my 22 year old!

Be well,

Barbara,

It is awesome to see Lance do his thang and overcome so much. I always liked that line he said in Dodgeball talking to Peter LaFleur who was considering quitting the championship dodgeball match. "Well, ya know, I had testicular, lung, and brain cancer, all at the same time but I came back and won 6 Tour de Frances in a row, but I am sure this decision won't haunt you for the rest of your life." Very funny but so true. Good piece.

Though I don’t ride a bike and never have learned to

OK, Barbara. That's it. I'm coming down to Florida right now and showing you how it's done. Neither of us will ever be racers, but at least we will be able to ride down to the local Walmarts so we can buy a new inner tube, or something. Maybe some neat reflectors.

...where there is a will, there is a way. Lance is proof that you can overcome just about anything with sheer determination. He is an incredible athlete and an excellent role model in a sports world full of overly pampered, over-paid, misbehaving jocks. And you are right, what a thrill he gave us all. Knowing it was his final race made it extra special.

I enjoyed your special tribute to a great human being!

it simply fabulous? As always, we watched every bit of coverage we could. Every year I marvel at how beautiful the race route is - I so envy your French travels!

I thought I would be terribly sad when Lance retired - and I am - but having watched now all these years, I can't wait to see who is next - who comes up and grabs the prize. It's a spectacular event, made all the more so by the presence of Lance.

I've never had sports heroes. Until now. Wonderful tribute, this.

you wrote this great essay about this great American. With your knowledge of France, you manage to bring his achievement to a life few of us can realize.

As I head off to the Alps to do my own tour (though on unicycle), I've been inspired in my training by Lance (and many other great riders of the Tour). Nice essay. One small correction: you write,

"each stage of the race is a thrill as the excitement pitch gets higher and higher when Lance wins stage after stage of this grueling race. "

If you're referring to this last Tour, Lance "only" won a single stage, that being the individual time trial on Saturday... He did, of course, keep his overall lead for most of the Tour, which meant also wearing the yellow jersey nearly every stage-- maybe that's what you meant. At any rate, there is no doubt he brought the Tour and cycling to another level, and he will be missed in the years to come-- on the road anyway.

-John

P.S. Follow some other Americans for a grueling tour this summer:
