The tear-jerkers that most affect me (Alexdg1's Sounds of Sadness Writeoff)
by Stephen_Murray | Jul 25 '05
Cheer up from the comparison: these singers have it worse (and in the last one, way far worse).

Le Nozze de Figaro (Reply to this comment)

is an example, for me, of "too many notes." "Dove sono" is gorgeous, but does not rend my heart (ditto for the last three of Richard Strauss's very triste Last Songs, though at least one would have made a list of 10).

I can never understand what is unreasonable about the Queen of Night in "Die Zauberflöte." Her high-flying first aria would be my Mozart candidate.

So why not make your own operatic list for Alex's writeoff?

I'm glad you mentioned Dido's Lament - it's the one that popped into my mind when I read what your review was about. But how about the Countess' Dove sono and Porgi amor from Marriage of Figaro? Heart-rending.

The WInner Takes It All (Reply to this comment)

It was a local tv reprise of a loss, I think to the Giants.

I'm surprised that I didn't include Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or Neil Young's "Expecting to Fly," but too many possibilities surged.

I'll look forward to your list.

excellent choice, there - Aretha inspires real emotions, no matter what she sings. Love that song...

And as a third-generation Forty Niner Faithful (my grandfather used to take my dad to games at Kezar), I feel your pain - but why "Winner Takes It All"? Did they use that in an NFL film of that particular game, or was it used during the broadcast itself - or perhaps you just made the connection in your mind?

I remember the pain of losing to the Cowboys in the playoffs of the early seventies, but I don't have any song from that era that I link to those losses. However, "We Are the Champions" is linked to those five Super Bowls - though it's probably linked to everyone's memories of every major sports team championship since the song came out...

nice article - I'm trying to whittle my list down, and having a hard time doing so.

"Don't ever let another take her love from me
Or I will surely die" as a lead in to "In reality, she doesn't even know me" makes me shiver rather than cry." Her love may not be heavenly, but the song is (more delicate than Eric Clapton's beautiful "Tears in Heaven").

Every night on my knees I pray... (Reply to this comment)

I just about lose it every time the Temps get to that "Dear Lord" part in "Just My Imagination". There's something that's just so intimate and vulnerable in that, especially with the way the arrangement just sort of clears the stage for that brief bit of harmony - Dear Lord. And then Eddie Kendricks's falsetto prayer... I need a Kleenex.

Great stuff,

Paul

Yes, yes, yes! It's the song, instantly recognizable from the opening electric keyboard riff before Madeline Bell starts singing.

French!!!

Thank you, merçi!

I doubt that I ever heard the Skeeter Davis original.

Now if someone will crack the more burning question of the singer of "Save your love for me"!

The first verse is:
Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more...

Glad Kath found the answer... I could hear it clearly being sung in my head.

It ended when you said good-bye

Oh yeah. I need to get a copy of that one.

......so I became a woman obsessed....found the 45 and yep, it is sung by Skeeter Davis. I tried to read the names that wrote it, but that area is not clear at all. It is on the RCA Victor label.

Okay, time for bed...lol.......kath

....Well, after posting my comment I read all of the comments and you've suggested Skeeter Davis as the writer...wonder if she was both the writer and singer as well. I know I had it on a 45 (probably around here somewhere too) and that name just stands out.

It was written by Skeeter Davis, ©1963
I don't know who originally recorded it

The first verse is:
Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more...

Not "It's the End of the World As We Know It" which was used in "Independence Day."

The one I want identified is the singer of the version of "Save your love" (a title of many different songs).

Are you talking about End of The World As We Know It, by R.E.M.?

For a point of reference, it is the song that plays at the beginning of the film "Independence Day", as the guy monitoring the skies is playing miniature golf.
