10 not always included! UPDATED!Jul 26 '05 (Updated Jul 27 '05) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Rent May - Best Horror in last number of years. David Lynch movies are also must see's. (*NOTE*) This list is meant to supplement others. I did not want to rehash others lists, but rather, put some movies I feel often get left out and should be seen! #10 - Cube I have to include a Canadian movie here.......Spooky with some great special effects. A nice "artsy" horror. Basically the story is that six people find themselves stuck in a hive of cubes, with no idea how they got there or why they were abducted. They have to work together to figure out the puzzle to escape often with horrific outcomes. #9 Phantasm Underrated movie by a really young director. The follow-ups don't compare to this movie. Its very Lynchian in its tone. Weird, spooky and interesting story. Basically, a couple of friends attend a funeral and notice "A Tall Man" working at the funeral home. After some snooping around he sees the tall man put a loaded coffin into the back of a hearse....Basically, they continue to snoop until a very interesting ending....Not too much gore except for the metal ball used by the "tall man" to drill into peoples heads....It is one of the first movies to have victims that actually do something other than scream! #8 - The Shinning Already reviewed......by many others. #7 - the Blob (90's version) I find this movie really gross and disturbing. Not AWSOME but, it really freaked me out as a kid. Some horrific scenes , ie. the Blob on the ceiling of the movie theatre. I must admit, the story is a bit cheesy, but the gore effects are superb. I still have some images from that movie in my head, often coming back in random nightmares. #6 Hellraiser Series Again, freaked me out and interesting special effects. Story was unique so I gotta give it credit. Series begins with a person finding a mysterious puzzle box...Once opened, "demons to some, angels to others" appear and torture those who opened the box. Are they villains? Or are they simply doing what it is they do? IN fact, the "demons" in hellraiser are not always evil, which is what makes it interesting...I was always interested in the dialogue of these movies (first 2 mainly). It is one of the first movies where there is actual dialogue between killer and potential victim. Also, this one gets gory. The demons summon a multitude of hooks, chains and whatnot to "tear your soul apart" or less metaphorically speaking, tear peoples' skin off. Unfortunately, as the series went on, it became all that it tried not to be, a sad slasher film following ever horror stereotype imaginable. But, the first 2 or 3 are defiantly worth checking out. #5 Mother's Day "Boys, you've made your mother very proud." Just plain weird and interesting, but a beautiful story of what two boys will do for their mother. In typical early 80's style, it is a horror-black-comedy of sorts, although more in the style of Texas Chainsaw M than anything else, with hints of the movie Deliverance. The two murderous brothers Ike and Addley are so creepy, you forget they are acting and you actually kind of root for them! Ike and Addly are most interesting when speaking. They use sound bytes from movies, music and television. IN fact, it is almost a made up language only they can understand. Some of the most disturbing scenes are when the victim girls, as part of their torture are forced to act scenes from the boys' favorite movies. This type of behavior somehow validates these red-necks and they come away thinking that they are normal; or better yet, "citified." Ike and Adly are intellectually incapable of recognizing fiction from nonfiction. They are violent and impulsive because that is exactly what they see and hear day in and day out on the tube. Did you notice that Boogie Nights ripped off a scene in the movie (maybe not ripped off, but certainly borrowed)?????? Check it out and see if you can find it ;) #4 Texas Chainsaw (70's) Reviewed to excess, but a GREAT movie all round. #3 Evil Dead Series Just fantastic, like PEter Jackson's old movies, its neat to see where the current Spiderman Director came from with his ridiculous horror movies. No plot, no story, just fun filled yucky horror. Sam Raimi is fantastic with his creative camera angles (still used in Spiderman) and humor. Also, Bruce Campbell is a black comedy genius. Stand outs in the movie include, a scene where Bruce (Ash) after his hand becoming "possessed" cuts it off..The hand then goes on a rampage trying to kill him...Funny stuff. 2#- Eraserhead and Blue Velvet (tie) Basically every David Lynch movie has elements of a horror movie, but he is just so creative its hard to classify. Rent Eraserhead if you want to see and FEEL disturbing images. A young lad named Henry basically wanders through a post-apactyliptic world, where everyone acts so bizarre, words can't describe it. Henry, visits his girlfriends house where he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant with some bizarre baby-like-thing. The scene at the dining room table is funny and oh-so-weird, with Henry's father-in-law telling a story about pipes....."look at my knees!" Its a huge metaphor of a movie...My thought, its David Lynches meditation on his thoughts about having his first baby. What is his life going to become, is life worth living, will his life as it is now change so much that the current person will die..Not the most mainstream movie by any stretch of the word, but a classic to be viewed by hardcore film fans...."in heaven, everything is fine...." Blue Velvet (David Lynch Too), with the best opening scene in film history. A perfect town, firemen wave, crossing guards take you across the street, white picket fences....But there is pressure, something building, something hidden. It is something horrible, and you'll only find it, if you look under the beauty. A story of Jeffery, who discovers a human ear in a field. He is intrigued by the mystery associated with the ear and explores further. Is he a detective or a pervert? Jefferey eventually finds himself involved with a lounge singer (Isabella Rossilini) who is being blackmailed by :Frank (dennis hopper). Frank, may be the best villain, apart from Hannibal, to grace the screen. He is TERRIFYING. I don't want to give too much away, but I recommend watching this movie. Like most Lynch films, you need to be in the right mood and ready to allow yourself to experience a little bit of surrealism. 1# May New movie, great interesting plot. First time director L. McKee gets a great performance out of his actors and delivers an amazing debut. One of the first horror movies were people act like people(well, for the most part). It is the story of a young girl (think Carrie) who has been a left-out oddball all her life.....May, as a child, had to wear an eye patch due to an eye problem. The kids at school ask "are you a pirate?" Growing up isn't much better, eventually, her parents give her a doll encased in glass. ...Her Mother, "I always say, if you can't find a friend, make one"..May attempts to open the box, "No, you can't open it, she's special." Very spooky doll (that DOESN'T need to come to life to be scary) that basically lives in the head of the lead character. May grows up to become a vet assistant (obviously not a good idea to have a potential serial killer around vet supplies now is it?). She chases boys, girls, anything, she doesn't know what she wants, only that she wants someone to "see her." Fortunatly, she meets a nice guy who, is also a bit "weird." A great scene in the movie, has May and her new man Adam watching one of his "movies" from film school- A short zombie-esqe gorefest where two lovers alternate between love-making and eating each other....May snuggles closer to Adam, which a huge golden smile....Adam askes, "so may, what did you think?" She replies, "Well, I don't think the guy could have bitten the girls finger off in one bite, that part was kind of far-fetched." The two begin making out, were May bites Adams lip till it bleeds...."Its just like in your movie".....Adam, "this is weird," May, "but you like weird" Adam, "Not this weird"...So sets up the rest of the movie with May attemping to reconcile with Adam....WIth each day, the spooky doll "Susi" (who also taught May how to kiss) is slowly coming out of her glass box, crack by crack of the glass. I'll save the rest, as there are great moments throughout the film. I rented this movie, after reading a review by Ebert. I assumed it was a silly horror movie when I noticed it in theaters, but I gave it a chance based on his review, expecting nothing..Was I ever surprised. Highly recommended with a brilliant ending. |
