A Crackling Candle

Written: Sep 25 '08 (Updated Sep 25 '08)
Pros:Nice looking jar, Scent is not too strong, Creates nice ambience
Cons:Scent is not strong enough, Crackling of wick is low
The Bottom Line: I like the look and idea behind the WoodWick candle however I hope the other scents smell stronger. Otherwise, this is a very unique candle that you should try!

I love candles. I find that candles create a certain atmosphere or ambience in a home. Whether it is summer scents like citrus and fruits or fall scents like pies and cookies, it does something to the senses when you smell something delightful. I have candles in every room and they are from different companies. Some I have been able to find at my local drugstore, others are the well known Yankee Candles and most recently I have discovered the WoodWick brand. I originally came across these unique candles when I visited a candle factory in my town. I did not purchase any that day however I found them once again at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I was excited because I did not think they would sell them in just a regular chain store. I bought one 10 oz. Cinnamon Chai scented candle for $16.99, and this review is about that product.

The name of the company that manufacturers the WoodWick candles is Virginia Candle Company. They have a website which is www.virginiacandle.com, where you can purchase their products and you can visit their store in Virginia. According to the website, the company was founded in 1990 in Lynchburg, Virginia. The company states that their goal is to make innovative products of the highest quality available. They like to use pure ingredients, some of which include organic wood wicks, natural wax blends, and essential fragrance oils.

There are three different categories of scents which include: Fun & Fruity, Fresh & Floral, and Sugar & Spice. Let's just say that you are guaranteed to find a scent that you will love with so many to choose from. I have found three products under the Cinnamon Chai scent that I had purchased. This also includes a 22 oz. jar, a .47 fl. oz. fragrance oil bottle, and a 7.4 oz. reed diffuser and reed diffuser refills.

The one thing you will notice about a WoodWick candle is how fancy it looks. Although Yankee Candles have nice pictures on them showing an illustration of the scent of the candle, WoodWick candles just look elegant. Although the jar is just plain glass and clear, you have a dark brown durable wood lid with the emblem of the brand name that when put back on the top it looks fancy. Normally I throw away the tops to the candles figuring I will never need to use them. With the WoodWick candles I keep them to cover the candle when it is not lit. The label on the front of the candle is also distinguishing for me because it feels like it's made of hard plastic and almost looks like you could peel it off because the edges are raised a little. The name is on the label as well. For some reason, I just find that plain is more elegant than a product label being too busy and that is why I believe the WoodWick candle jar looks fancy.

On the bottom of the jar are the normal precautions related to candle use along with the instructions. This candle is said to burn 100 hours. The instructions state to burn the candle for 3-4 hours per use. They also recommend to trim the wick 1/8" before each use and when candle has burned up to 6 hours.

Now here is one of the great things about the candle! Normally to trim a candle wick I have to use scissors. I never bought the candle scissors that are angled to make it easy to get in the candle jar so I always have a difficult time trimming the wick. Sometimes I even trim it too much and then I can't even light the candle. With the WoodWick candle the only thing you need to do in order to trim the wick is to just gently break off the black burned parts on the wick. It is that easy! That is definititely one of the benefits of having a wood wick.

Another feature that sets this candle apart from others is the fact that the wood wick is supposed to create the sound of a burning flickering flame. That is what originally caught my attention to these candles. I was excited to light it particularly at night, when I had some alone time with my husband to relax and could possibly share a glass of wine. I thought it would create a calming atmosphere. I do in fact hear the crackling that reminds you of a burning fire however it is kind of low. You will not be able to hear it if you have the television loud or other distractions such as dogs or children. You also have to be careful with it because I have noticed the flame burns a little high and it almost looks as if pieces of the flame are going up in the air. I would just not place the candle near fabrics that are flammable just in case. That is general common sense when burning candles anyway.

The Cinnamon Chai candle is a deep red in color. I usually do not pay attention to the color as much as the scent itself. This color is very rich looking however. When you smell the candle before lighting it smells almost like what cinnamon gum may smell like. It is a sweet smell. Once the candle is lit however I have found that the scent is no longer as pronounced and I believe my Yankee Candles that are lit nearby overtake the scent of the WoodWick candle. I have also found that soy candles I have purchased at my supermarket have a stronger scent as well. This could be because some scents are stronger than others and I have yet to try any other scents.

If you love candles like I do then I recommend trying the WoodWick candles out. Like I said, they have many different scents and I personally am looking forward to trying others. They are nice to be placed in any room and will create an ambience that other candles perhaps cannot create.
