The Bottom Line Couch Potatoes of the world unite!
Although, Im a blackbelt couch potato, I decided to join in on Puckmugger's Sports Challenge W/O. For more information and to join, just click the link. 1. What are your favorite sports to watch on television? You got a minute? I love watching: Baseball, football, hockey, basketball, bicycling, horse racing, bowling, soccer, beach volleyball, skiing, Olympics, skating, golf, tennis, and the occasional x-games, and NASCAR. Im not fond of trash sports but Ive even been known to watch the Quarterback Challenge when Im totally bored. My husband marvels that he found a woman who enjoys watching sports as much as does. At first, he thought I was just doing it to impress him, but he soon found that Id been watching sports broadcasts and going to events from the time I was a little girl trying to understand the intricacies of football and reveling in the summer baseball sounds that screamed vacation! When I was in high school, I used to press my ear to my screen window at night and listen to the minor league baseball sounds from Vince Genna Stadium, about a mile away. My husband took me to my first major league game at the Kingdome during the Mariners inaugural season, and eventually took me to see my girlhood favorite Dodgers on a trip to his hometown, Los Angeles. It was a dream come true to sit in Chavez Ravine, feel the sun beat down on me and the sand air scrub my arms raw, to taste a real Dodger Dog and just feel the testosterone (and I guess a few steroids) pulsing off the field. 2. How often do you watch sports on television? I see at least a half dozen sports broadcasts on the weekend (often utilizing my picture in a picture) and an occasional game during the week. Unless its a special week like the Olympics or Wimbledon or the U.S. Open Golf tournament. We only get over-the-air broadcast, so alasno ESPN (and all its clones) or OLN. I start with golf or tennis, hit a baseball game and maybe what I call a variety sport (one that we only see when something special is happening.), then on Sunday I catch the same with a little NASCAR thrown in the mix. 3. What are your favorite sports to watch live? Baseball and horse racing (you can read my review of Emerald Downs here. Baseball can be a subtle game sometimes with signs flashing and rivalries flaring. Those just dont make it to the broadcast, so I need to get my fix watching from the stands. With horse racing, I just love horses, so when I watch racing, I like to be near the action where I can feel the dust clouds kicked up by the pack, smell the hot horseflesh, and hear the bugler call the horses to post. 4. How many live sporting events do you typically attend annually? Just one or two these days since it is difficult for me to sit very long in stadium seating without having to prop my leg up to keep the swelling down a bit. 5. What organized team sports have you ever participated in previously? I used to play volleyball in a church league and in a community center league. That was a lot of fun even though Im a little short and not very coordinated. 6. What organized individual sports have you participated in previously? I used to walk in a lot of charity walk/run events. It seems like theres one a month most of the year in Seattle. Now that I cant walk long distances, I stumble out to get the mail each day and call it good. 7. What pick-up sports have you participated in previously? none 8. What sports or outdoor activities do you currently participate in? Very small amount of walking. 9. How often? Hardly ever 10. Is there any sport that you wish you could participate in now? Id love it if I could swim again. 11. Whats keeping you from doing it? hmmm...long story shortparalyzed left arm, damaged left lung which makes it hard to breathe, condition called lymphedema in my right leg and left arm which makes even walking very difficult 12. If your fairy godmother was going to give you all the skill and a job in pro sports, what sport would you play? I would be a jockey! I love to feel the powerful horse underneath me. When I was a girl, all I wanted was a horse. Finally, my mom relented somewhat, and rented our pasture to a women who needed a place for her horse. I got to feed him, clean him, and talk to him. He refused to let me ride him. Then he started jumping pasture fences to get to mares in the neighborhood and that was the end of it. They found him a new home. I have ridden other horses, but I think riding in a race would be the ultimate. 13. What team and position (if relevant)? Id love to race horses for D. Wayne Lukas, one of the premier trainers. 14. What beer would you promote as a sports celebrity? (OK, that was just to make certain Bruguru, Marty and Fuche participate) My brew would be SoBe Green Tea (Love the Lizard!) 15. What brand would you promote? See above 16. Do you have any sports heroes? Who are they and why are they your heroes? There are a number of athletes that I admire. I hesitate to put them on the hero pedestal, since that can lead to major disappointment when they act human. I have been impressed by: golfer Phil Mickelson; tennis stars Andy Roddick, Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport; and hoopster Sue Bird because they seem to be truly mannered athletes as well as tough competitors. I also think that bicyclist, Lance Armstrong; diver, Greg Louganis; ice skater, Scott Hamilton; and jockey, Gary Stevens are all athletes who have overcome health problems and excelled in spite of their obstacles. 17. If you could invent a new sport, no matter how absurd, what would it be? Wow! How about some sort of recliner sport like catching nerf balls in a Lacrosse-type racquet? Well, thanks Puckmugger, this has been fun. We should do it again sometime. Oh by the way, my second part of the challenge can be found here This Blanket is an All Star in My Book |
