I was a Cingular customer for three years. I had my share of dropped calls, calls that go straight to voicemail, busy circuit messages, etc. But, generally, they had acceptable service.
Be warned though: they have shady contract practices and their customer service is either incompetent or purposely unethical. I signed up for a 2 year contract, and at 2-and-a-half years I called them to see what other plans were available to me. During the call I found out that shortly after my contract ended, I had "gotten an upgraded phone and had signed up for a new 2-year contract." I was surprised, but not too worried at first, because I had never upgraded my phone or signed a new contract. But no luck, I spent the next six months trying to get the situation resolved. All written and customer service calls I made were met with condescending responses. Several times I got a seemingly friendly manager to start a review of my account to produce the hypothetical contract, but I would never hear back, and there would be no record of any such request on my account when I later called back.
Here's the worst part, I've moved out-of-state where there isn't Cingular service, and while most other cellphone companies have clauses that let you out of your contract gracefully if they can't continue to provide you service, Cingular doesn't. So I'm stuck with a $150 term fee on a contract I never signed.
I've had contracts with Airtouch, AT&T, and Verizon, and these guys are the absolute worst. Beware.
