The Bottom Line Scott is up to his old tricks again.
1. What are your favorite sports to watch on television? Baseball, basketball, football. Football used to be #1, but I still have a bit of a beef in my heart for the NFL for letting Art Modell sell the city of Cleveland out in 95. I barely watched pro football during the years when there were no Cleveland Browns, and am still less devoted than I used to be. Though college ball, now I was pretty elated when my Alma Mater won the title in '03 and perversely enjoy hearing fans of Miami still whine about it. I usually get pretty hooked on the Olympics and World Cup soccer when those events come around, though I only watch the individual sports sparingly outside of the Games. Ever since I got TVG, I've been watching a lot of horse racing, too. I also seem to recall something about a game played on ice by guys with sticks that I really, really used to like watching but it's been so long since it has been on TV I can hardly remember it. Hooky, I think, or is that what you do when you call in sick from work? Oh, yeah, boxing too, though the sport has lost a lot of credibility in my eyes over the last couple decades. 2. How often do you watch sports on television? Only three times a day: Morning, noon, and night. Seriously. The Dodger game is on as I write this, and I looked in at the Angels, Braves and Cubs earlier. Of course, it is a Sunday and I can do that. 3. What are your favorite sports to watch live? Pretty much the same ones as on TV. Baseball, basketball, football, hockey and horse racing. I went to the Olympic swimming trials last year in Long Beach and that was really cool. 4. How many live sporting events do you typically attend annually? I'm a little embarrassed to say it is probably something like 40 or 50. I go to around fifteen baseball and basketball games each (pro, college and minor), a handful of football games, the track every couple months and less hockey games than I would like, usually around 5. Throw in the odd soccer game and pool event, and 50 seems plausible. 3 or 4 a month for sure. 5. What organized team sports have you ever participated in previously? Baseball, basketball, football and soccer. I was miserable in all of them. I can shoot the basketball OK if I'm left alone, but even a hand in my face ruins it. Soccer is the only one where I was close to passable; I played fullback, where all I had to was get the ball away from the other team's offense and wasn't expected to do anything fancy. I could do that much OK. 6. What organized individual sports have you participated in previously? I'm tempted to make an off-color joke, but I think bowling and golf in high school count. I used to skate when I was a kid, but I don't think I've laced up a pair of skates since Reagan was in office. 7. What pick-up sports have you participated in previously? Basketball, football, softball. We used to have a pick up football game every Sunday when I was in my early twenties. I'll never forget the time a guy blew his knee out getting tackled. That's when I realized I was too old for something as stupid as adult tackle football without pads. 8. What sports or outdoor activities do you currently participate in? We went bowling last night. I go to the beach pretty often, seeing as I live a block from the Pacific. I used to go to the driving range when I lived down the street from one, and I hope to start doing that more often. My girlfriend just bought me a new basketball, and I'm itching to try it out on a court soon. I usually take the dog on a pretty long walk at night. 9. How often? Not often enough. 10. Is there any sport that you wish you could participate in now? I'd like to play more golf. 11. Whats keeping you from doing it? That stuff is expensive, Holmes. I haven't played 18 holes since high school and feel a little intimidated, to be honest. You know, I'd like to try ice skating again; there are a couple rinks in Southern California, believe it or not. 12. If your fairy godmother was going to give you all the skill and a job in pro sports, what sport would you play? I guess NBA basketball. Basketball is the most fun to play. Football is fun, too, but I want to be able to walk when I'm 50. I wouldn't say no to being able to throw a 100 mph fastball or hit a curveball either. Hockey not so much, seeing as they are taking such a paycut next year. 13. What team and position (if relevant)? The Cavaliers need another big body and help at point guard, so maybe I could be the next Magic Johnson? 14. What beer would you promote as a sports celebrity? (OK, that was just to make certain Bruguru, Marty and Fuche participate) Guinness. It's Good for you. 15. What brand would you promote? I have a hemp shirt made by Jus Naturale that I really like, I'd have them make me a custom jersey and trunks. New Balance shoes, though, more traditionally. 16. Do you have any sports heroes? Who are they and why are they your heroes? A bunch of them over the years. Currently I like Coco Crisp on the Indians for the name and his game--he does a little bit of everything--and Randy Johnson because he is so mean (and despite his being a Yankee now). My favorite basketball players right now are Corey Magette and Zydrunas Illgauskas. Football, there isn't anybody that really stands out right now, though I root for anybody from OSU and the Big Ten. All-time, I like the guys who left a mark on the world, too--Jesse Owens, Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson & Larry Doby, Muhammed Ali. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Bill Walton because he went to Egypt (and presumably got high) with the Grateful Dead. Plus, I admired the way he kept coming back from his injuries (same as Z, above). He does talk too much, however. 17. If you could invent a new sport, no matter how absurd, what would it be? I think dog rugby is just waiting to blow up as a sport. |
