Welcome Home Weary Traveler~Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA

Written: Oct 05 '08 (Updated Oct 07 '08)
Pros:The whole Shenandoah Valley Inn experience.
Cons:Living 1100 miles from the Shenandoah Valley Inn.
The Bottom Line: Give the Shenandoah Valley Inn a try and I know you, too, will return.

My husband and I retuned to Louisiana Thursday from our yearly sojourn in Staunton, VA. Every year at the end of September, the Fortune-Williams Music Festival takes place for three days. During that time, we want a place where we can stay and be comfortable and feel like you are home without all of the hassle of being at home.

We love to stay at Bed and Breakfasts; they are such a relaxing and welcoming place to stay. The people that you meet are usually very respectful of your privacy and you don’t have the worry about a party going on in the room next to yours or a crying child.

After our stay in Staunton, last year, we knew that we did not want to stay at the Bed and Breakfast we were staying in again. It just wasn’t up to par with the others we have been to. We did some walking around town and really didn’t find anything that we liked so when we returned home, my sister and I did some searching online to find a B&B that we would like and that is when we came upon the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA. The description of the Inn and the pictures were wonderful, then again so were the pictures and description of the one we stayed in in 2007. We decided to book our reservations for 2008 and found out the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA had not been open for long, maybe six months at that time of our reservations.

Finally, the day came when we were able to see the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA for ourselves.

We arrived to a beautiful southern style mansion built in 1906. The front lawn was manicured. There is a walk that leads you to the inviting portico with pillars on each side, a swing on the left and a very comfortable bench on the right. To us, it said, hey weary traveler you are home.

When you step inside, you receive a warm greeting by the owner and Innkeeper, Dan Sager and a beautiful calico cat named Claire. Dan is very happy to show you around this beautiful creation of his. He takes you to your suite and explains everything and even shows you here the directions are for the use of the TV, VCR, fireplace, and the clock radio. He lets you know the rules of the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA. There aren’t any that you shouldn’t already know when going about your life on a daily basis.

When you first arrive and go through the front door, you will notice gleaming hardwood floors and the grand staircase that goes up to three guestrooms. To your left is the sitting room with the same gleaming hardwood floors. In this room you will find a baby grand piano, at the far end, just waiting for someone with talent to play. The sitting area is at the front of the room with a sofa and two beautiful chairs. The color scheme the owner chose is beautiful and very relaxing. Greens and golds.

On your right of the front door is a hall that leads to the office and to the formal dining room. The four tables in the room are set for two people, but close enough to each other that you can have a group conversation with the other guest if you choose to. Each morning you come down to the tables set with white table cloths, gleaming silver, beautiful dishes and stemware. Now the business of breakfast starts. Three courses. Usually the first course is a fresh fruit medley, the your main course which can be a quiche, pancakes, stuffed French toast maybe with ham or sausage. The final course is very delightful. It is a sweet of some kind like a muffin or a tart. Something new every morning. Even the butter has been molded into shapes.

You never want for anything while sitting at the breakfast table. Your coffee cup is kept full or if you are a tea drinker, a little basket of different kinds of teas are placed at your table with a teapot full of hot water. You can have your tea anyway you like it.

In the library, which is at the right of the front door, you will find several newspapers along with books, board games and a book of places to see and things to do while in Staunton.

We booked the Governor Gooch Suite. When you enter the first door to the suite, you will find a sitting room equipped with a flat screen TV, a DVD player, a daybed, a comfortable chair, a screen that has been painted with pictures of dogs.

Our room had a very comfortable four poster bed along with two nightstands, clock radio, an armoire, and electric fireplace that is turned on and off with a remote control. The windows are covered with wooden shutters that you can open and close to suit your needs. Just in case you need it, there is a ceiling fan and an air conditioner in each room.

In the room there is a Settee with a reading lamp in case that is what you want to do, but that comfy bed keeps calling after a day of going to a Festival or walking the historic downtown area of Staunton.

There is a solid door that leads out to the wonderful veranda that has two comfy rocking chairs and lots of blooming plants. My husband and I would sit out there as much as possible. When sitting there you can look out to the terraced garden with the fish ponds and a foot path that will take you all over.

When it came time to get your shower, there was nothing left for you to need in the bathroom. It had everything. Plush, white towels, bath gel. Lotion, shampoo and conditioner. There is a blow dryer in each of the bathrooms, so you don’t even need to pack that if you don’t want. This is a modern bathroom. One of the rooms still has the old claw foot tub.

When returning for the evening to the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA, you will notice that in the library there are chocolates set out along with crystal stemware and a bottle of Pear Port, Amaretto or Cognac. When the guests return, it is inviting to unwind from your day and some really interesting conversations take place.

You may be saying to yourself that the price must be very high to get all of this pampering. It really isn’t. Our room ran $190 a night for two people. Ours was the largest of the three rooms upstairs. There is another room that is even larger downstairs done in contemporary furnishings. To me, all the rooms were very large. The other B&B we have stayed at, the rooms pale in comparison to the rooms at the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA.

Check in is at 3pm and checkout is at 11am.

All too soon, you will realize that your time is drawing to a close at the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA. It will be time to say goodbye to all the wonderful time you shared with the other guests and with Mr. Dan Sager. We will be back next year.

Reservations can be made by calling (866) 466-1733 or you may book online. Check out the website of the Shenandoah Valley Inn B&B/Staunton, VA. http://www.shenandoahvalleyinn.com/index.php I think you will agree with me that this is a one of its kind place to stay. Thank you Dan and Miss Claire for the wonderful hospitality and such a beautiful place to stay.

Now its time for me to set the table for our breakfast in the morning, should I serve pop tarts or cereal? It really is a downer when real life gets in the way.
