Good read, George (Reply to this comment)

... and glad to see Khartoum and Sharkey's Machine in there, too. Two of my favorites, as well- and not given enough light to the public.

Thanks! I'm sure if several of these are your top favorites you will like the rest as our tastes must be very similar. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

Yeah, William, we could expand that list by quite a few. I think it was one of your comments that led me to the Anthony Mann noirs. I had just seen the westerns and of course FOT Roman Empire and Spartacus. Since I am too recent with the noirs, at this point I would have to choose FOTRE for my Mann fav.
Of course Hawks and John Ford are two of my big favorites but I left John Wayne off the list, sort of intentionally, as I think I could make a top ten westerns list with just him on it, he was so good. Gordon Douglas made an indelible impression on me with Only the Valiant, starring Gregory Peck in one of his very best performances. Of course Bob Mitchum could easily make a top ten list, as could Lee Marvin, Jack Palance, or Christopher Walken - I'm thinking of the Dogs of War rather than Deerhunter.
Don "Hell is for Heroes" Siegel, of course, is one of my favorites, and Two Mules for Sister Sarah is his swan song with Clint. I'm not that nuts about Clint as a Director, to tell you the truth. He doesn't know how to do convincing action, should edit the dead time out of his pics (15-20 mins), and usually chooses Lalo Shifrin, one of the lamest composers to score his work - or worse, himself. He should pay a little more and not try to do everything himself. It would help his legacy, imho.
Aldrich I can only think of The Dirty Dozen and Ulzana's Raid, which I think is a pretty dang good western in itself.
There I go making another list. :o
Cheers, bud!

The dialog is a big part of the charm for me. We have a great bunch of writers here and I enjoy many, some of whom, alas, have stopped writing! Thanks for stopping by, bud!

Nice list, George (Reply to this comment)
by WilliamJones
I love reading these lists when favorite names or titles are mentioned: e.g., Ride the High Country (which I just saw, for the first time, on TCM yesterday), Paths of Glory, Shane, Raoul Walsh.
Just repeating what I already know, however, isn't very interesting. Thus I like to discover something unfamiliar, something new: The Siege of Firebase Gloria.
And I also like it when I'm nudged to get on the stick and watch something I'm familiar with but have not had the opportunity to see: Sharky's Machine.
If this were my list, you'd likely see one (or two) from the following: Howard Hawks, Robert Aldrich (one could make a case Attack! is as good as the similarly-themed Paths of Glory), the late, great Sam Fuller, Anthony Mann, Val Lewton/Jacques Tourneur, Preston Sturges, Orson Welles, Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood and Nick Ray. And that's just sticking close to home.
But we each approach these things in our own ways.

A very impressive list! (Reply to this comment)

I particularly liked the way you included a favorite quotation with each movie.
I appreciate the mention, George, but when it comes to combining quantity with quality, you are right there at the top of the list. I always enjoy your intelligent and insightful reviews. Sometimes our political viewpoints differ, by I always respect what you have to say and how you say it.

A mixed bag (Reply to this comment)

but ya likes what ya likes.
At the time of "Khartoum," Heston was a future-NRA president, and isn't he now a former one, sunk into Alzheimer's?
