Pros:Great action scenes that are worth the admission price, solid cast
Cons:Elements of the plot are unoriginal and could have been made better in that regard.
The Bottom Line: An entertaining movie with great action, good acting, and....some bad stuff
I didn't have very high expectations for this movie. I had heard about it's unoriginality and it's lack of an even slightly plausable plot. While these things are true for the most part, the film does have it's redeeming qualities.
The movie starts showcasing the somewhat aimless life of Jerry Shaw (Shia Labeouf), who works at a copying company, not really doing anything of importance, or that would attract attention. His life is disturbed when he gets a call from his mother, telling him his brother has died. Soon after this he gets a call that will further disturb his life, this time from a mysterious female voice who gives him instructions he must obey 'or else'. Jerry's hesitance to follow these orders gets him in trouble and he is suspected of terrorism, due to weapons found in his apartment that he had nothing to do with. Jerry is thrown together with a single mother named Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan), when she gets a call from the same voice, giving her instructions that bump her into Jerry. Rachel is told that she must obey to avoid the death of her son. The movie goes on from there, following Jerry and Rachel's desperation, confusion, and forced compliance with the instructions given to them by the voice, and agent Thomas Morgan's (Billy Bob Thornton) quest to track them down, all while slowly unveiling the mystery of the voice on the phone, mostly through the discoveries of agent Zoe Perez (Rosario Dawson).
The best thing about eagle eye is the action scenes. They are very well done and exciting to watch. Great car chases are included. The movie is action packed, so these scenes make it overall a very entertaining flick. The cast brought great enthusiasm to their roles, which helped the film tremendously. The two leads did fine, with Shia Labeouf and Michelle Monaghan portraying the right amount of confusion and desperation as the two main victims of a seemingly unstoppable situation. I thoroughly enjoyed Billy Bob Thornton as Thomas Morgan, the determined pursuer of Jerry and Rachel who has been left in the dark about a few things. Rosario Dawson does well with her role of the just as determined agent Perez. Michael Chiklis trys his best to add believability to a section of the movie that wasn't that way, playing defense secretary Callister, the guy who thinks he has everything down, but doesn't.
The bad qualities of the movie are unfortunate, because they could have been made to be better, turning the movie into an all around good film. For one, this movie is not so high on the originality meter. To name a few of the movies it has borrowed from would be potentially giving something away, so I won't name any. After seeing it though, a few movies will probably pop into your head. Certain elements of Eagle eye are very close to certain elements of these others. The frustrating part is that the movie could have easily gone in a slightly different direction with these to up the movie's originality. I don't know why they didn't choose to go with a few slightly different options. This also goes with the impausability of the plot. If they had just tweaked certain plot points of the movie, it could have been made much less implausable. But still, with it's faults also comes it's exhilirating action scenes and solid acting. On the issue of entertainment, the movie delivers big time. So if you try not to be too bothered with the film's unoriginality, you can definitely enjoy watching it.
