Pros: good graphics, characters with personality, several modes of play, not realistic
Cons: lame background music, requires substantial amount of time to improve characters greatly, not realistic
The Bottom Line: Loads of fun, alone or with a friend. Can be frustrating at times but will keep you coming back for more.

| ijustagirl's Full Review: SSX for PlayStation 2 |
Though it takes a little time to pick up, this game is absolutely great! You have several different characters to choose from, each with their own personality and riding style. As you win races, you earn points toward improving your rider's proficiency in things such as tricks, speed, and stability. The two-player mode is great with a friend but this game can defanately be just as fun by yourself. You can choose from two different styles of competition; racing or showoff in which you try to finish in the top three positions or try to finish with the most number of trick point possible. Trick points are earned by doing flips, spins, and grabs as you send your rider leaping from cliffs, tall buildings, or car-tops. If you fail to land on your feet, your rider experiences a pretty nasty fall sometimes accompanied by a taunt from the announcer. Luckily, unlike real life, you hop back up and take off to do it again.
Some of the courses are a bit unrealistic, to say the least (human-sized pinball machines and the like) but rather than detracting from the game I think having to dodge moving walls and penguins ads an extra dimension. For those people who struggle to grasp anything beyond pong, fear not! This game is actually far easier to learn than it appears at first. After just two trips down the mountain, my boyfriend's father was completing 360 degree spins and flips along the way. It does take some practice to master combos and get your point scores high enough to earn medals but I think you progress quickly enough to not lose hope.
The one major con with this game is the method in which you improve your character can take a good deal of time and sometimes seem tedious. In the race mode, you have to place in the top three on the same course three times in a row to advance. It can be frustrating since you have to start again at the beginning if you fail to qualify at any of these steps. The fact that you are rewarded with experience points, however, will usually be enough motivation to keep you trying.
