Pros: Works well. Fast. Fun! A conversation piece, too.
Cons: Without preventative maintenance, it wears and may break. Can't get parts.
The Bottom Line: With just a little TLC, it's a great toy for the wine loving gadget freak, like me.

This gizmo works well when it's brand new. But as you use it, the low-friction coating on the "spiral" (the actual corkscrew part) wears off. If you do nothing about it, it begins to be harder to work, and eventually a plastic part inside, the part that makes the spiral rotate as it goes into and out of the cork, may break, leaving it non-functional.
That's happened to one of my friends, and almost happened to me. When I saw his break, I took mine apart and figured out the problem and found a solution.
The trick seems to be to keep the spiral lubricated so it spins freely in that plastic part. You can buy replacement spirals, but they're pretty pricey (in my opinion). I found that I can lubricate it satisfactorily, and have gotten lots of extra wear out of mine.
Don't use oil. I use Tri-Flow lubricant with Teflon. I take the spiral and its carrier out (it comes out through the top, after sliding a little cover out of the way), and spray the spiral itself and the ball bearing in the carrier with the Teflon lubricant, and then it's good for another few hundred corks. Your mileage may vary. Hope this helps.
