Calabrese's Pizza, Food for your Soul

The Bottom Line Great food, Great Prices, Great Owner.

Perry Farrell, of Jane’s Addiction, was being interviewed about ten years ago. Things weren’t looking too good for him; he seemed to be a smart choice for a Death Pool. Asked about crack cocaine, he said the problem wasn’t with the drug itself. When prompted for elaboration, he said, “The problem is that it isn’t made with love. If they made it with love, it would all be okay.”

I think he may have been wrong. Where I do give him a pass and say he may have a point is when it comes to my food. I use his line, when I stupidly buy a five dollar pizza and open the box to the dreary disappointment inside. I kind of sigh and say, “It wasn’t made with love”.

That is why I enjoy Calabrese’s Pizza. Every thing I have ever ordered feels like it was made with the love of an Italian grandmother for her grandson. We live in a culture that seems determined to race to the bottom. People settle for the wrong choices constantly. They choose the dude from Black Eyed Peas over ODB. Shania Twain over Sinead. Kenny Chesney over Jack White. Windows over Linux. You get my point. These same people might go for a lousy five dollar pizza, instead of spending a few extra bucks to get the good stuff. My fellow Americans, (and the few odd Canadians), let me tell you. You work too hard to waste your money on garbage. Treat yourself a little; spend a tiny bit more for some quality.

Calabrese’s is located in Waterford, Michigan. It is a place where your status isn’t measured by the car you drive, but how far from the ground your truck is. The place is so warm inside, it is straight out of a Kerouac novel. I can almost hear him describe it, in one huge run on sentence. The floor is oak and worn from years of the feet of the people who built this country and the carousel horse seems smiling and eager to please much like Anna whose lovely heart comes shining through her eyes and smile and you look around at all of the antique pieces sitting and stacks of magazines and comfortable tables and the cozy smell of baking and you can’t help but be reminded that America was once a great place. Not a good place, but a great one.

The place belongs in New York City, a hidden gem on some anonymous street. The hipsters would notice and take it over, writing their books and smoking. She would have to offer coffee that is one change. Soon the word would spread, and instead of the Matt Berningers of the world the Richard Jenis would start showing up, but I am jumping ahead of myself. What I am really trying to say is move this place to any big city in the world and it would have a passionate following. It is that good.

The food? Classic Italian pizza place fare. The vegetarian sub is great, even non-vegetarians can eat it. The Mexican pizza is my favorite, it is unlike any Mexican Pizza I have had before. She gives the subs their own special sauce. The bread sticks with garlic sauce are great. Cheese ravioli? Excellent. I promise you, you can order anything on the menu and not be disappointed. The toppings are generous. I am not a food critic, so I cannot describe the food properly. I am going after the spirit of the place.

Calabrese’s is a great place. My gushing review shows I am fond of it. There is one thing I should mention. Based on the experience of one customer, you can eat as much of it as you want and still manage to lose weight. You don’t get that at the pizza chains! If you live in Metro Detroit, do yourself a favor and check it out. If you are heading in town for the Super Bowl, find it and try it. It is family owned and has been for almost forty years. Anna Calabrese is a hands on owner, in that it is her hands making the food most of the time. The restaurant gives my cynicism pause, and for that I am grateful.
