| shoehorny's Full Review: DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste |
One day I came home from work and went to my home office. There I found a dozen or so machine gun holes in the wall!
Well, that is what my five year old son called them before he had his toy guns permanently taken away. He had jabbed holes in the wall to simulate machine gun holes. If my wife saw the holes she would surely make a big hullabaloo about it, so I figured I would fix it up before she saw them. So, I went to my shop and grabbed a spackling knife and my small container of DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste.
I had bought a container full to use on a rental house I was working on. I had to make a hole in a wall and I wanted something that would dry quickly so I could finish the project quick. That is the greatest attribute of this spackling paste: It dries quickly.
To use, you simply open the container, spoon out a glob of paste on your spackling tray, and then use your spackling knife to smooth the paste over the hole you wish to repair. Anyone can do this - it does not take much skill. Once the spackled area fully dries (in about an hour) you can lightly sand the repaired area with fine sandpaper, or smooth it out with damp sponge. This should be followed up by priming the area with a paint primer, then painted.
The spackle paste is intended to be used on drywall or plaster to repair small holes, cracks, or chips. It is not for using on new construction. For new construction, you should probably use joint compound or plaster of paris. I suppose in a pinch this spackling paste could be used, but it is a lot more expensive than joint compound.
For the project my son created for me, I coated the holes up in about five minutes. I went for a beer, did some puttering around, came back with a damp sponge, wiped the repaired area down, and brushed some paint over the holes. When the paint dried, there were no signs of the machine gun holes. Later, my son asked me: "Daddy, what happened to those machine gun holes?" Ugh!
DAP Spackling Paste is sold in many hardware stores, Home Depot and Walmart also carry this brand. I've also tried other brands of spackling paste and they are usually just as good. One really nice feature about the DAP paste is that it stores away fresh for a long period of time. I bought my container over a year ago, used some of it, closed it up tightly, and stored it in my basement. In the past, other brands dried out in that short period of time, but the DAP paste looked as fresh as new.
The paste is smooth and has a creamy texture. There is no need to add water or anything else. It comes ready to use out of the container. It is also sold in several size containers and in a tube. My container contained a half pint of paste and is good for a lot of holes! When the paste dries, it does not shrink and it dries hard and smooth.
I would highly recommend DAP's Crackshot Spackling Paste as it works great! However, there is nothing overly special about it that I would not be willing to trade off to other brands, if another brand was less expensive or on sale. I have also used home remedies in the past, in a pinch: Mix some white glue and flour together until you have a peanut butter consistency and spread it into holes. So, if you are on a budget or cannot get to a hardware store, there are alternatives. Thanks for reading my review and best wishes for a nice day!
