Pros:Inexpensive. Very Compact and Stylish. Reliable. Simple ribbon system won't dry out.
Cons:Used Ink Rolls are a security risk. Short roll life. Multi-page documents jam
The Bottom Line: A nice, compact, stylish and inexpensive fax machine for occasional use, not suitable for confidential incoming or multi-page outgoing faxes.
We used the Brother FAX-575 for a few months with decent results. The FAX-575 is a plain-paper Fax Machine that uses a roll of thermal transfer tape for ink. It comes with a very small "starter roll" that doesn't last very long at all. The modestly priced rolls last about 1-2 weeks of daily use with about 10 pages a day received.

One important thing to consider: The received faxes are not only stored in the machine's memory, but also are quite legibly imprinted onto the Ink Roll. This means that if any confidential faxes are received, the ink roll must be carefully disposed of, destroyed or kept for safekeeping.
So far as sending faxes goes, single-page faxes are trouble free but multi-page feeding is a problem as it can easily feed two pages at once or jam.
The menu system is easy to set up and the controls easy to use. Copy / print quality is decent and is not as susceptible to water/dampness as an inkjet fax. Placing a phone call with the built-in headset is easy with good volume and clarity at both ends.
The Brother FAX-575 is best suited to light use for single-page sending and non-confidential incoming faxes. Its compact footprint and pleasing style are a plus for a crowded desktop.
