But What Can I Do? I Am Just One Person...
Sep 02 '05
The Bottom Line We need your help! Please do whatever you can...any and every thing will be appreciated more than you could ever know. Thank you.
After reading the most recent post of iluvbirds, I felt compelled to write about this same topic and most especially, since I live in the beautiful state of Louisiana. Let me first state that I, nor any of my relatives, live in or around the city of New Orleans; we are all in the northwestern part of the state, and were not directly affected by Katrina.
The TV and radio stations and newspapers (local and national) are full of pictures, articles, and statistics. But when some of the focus is on the looters and the people carrying and using guns, is this truly the best portrayal of what devastation New Orleans, and parts of Mississippi and Alabama, are really in? I wonder...
Yes, these things are happening, but they are just a small part of what is really going on. So many people have lost everything that they owned, and may only have survived with the clothes that they were wearing when they evacuated. But the most important thing to them is that they are still alive.
You may say, "But how can I help? I am just one person?" Believe me, there are many ways that you can help: volunteer your time and talents, donate blood, make contributions to the Red Cross and other organizations, and donate food and clothes...these are just a few of the things that you can do. You do not have to live in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama to help...anyone can help, and it will be greatly appreciated.
I will tell you some of the ways that I have personally helped: I cleaned out some of our clothes, men's and women's alike, and my daughter-in-law and I took them to our city's Salvation Army location, and helped distribute them to a family from New Orleans. The look of sincere appreciation on those people's faces was all of the thanks that we needed. I also bought some non-perishable food, toiletry items, and toys, and gave them to a local church that had set up a shelter. I will also donate blood, but I have to wait until next week when I am eligible to donate again. I am just one person, but I made a difference.
Most people associate New Orleans with the French Quarter and Mardi Gras, but there is so much more to the city: the beautiful architecture (seen both in buildings and homes alike), the history, the folklore, the museums, the universities, the churches, the street cars...I could go on and on indefinitely. I spent 5 1/2 years of my adult life there (matter of fact, this is the city where my son was born), so I am familiar with the area and its unique history and beauty, both of which I hope and pray, can and will be, restored.
As a resident of Louisiana, I ask you to please consider what you can do to help our state and its people, and then please do it. No gesture is too small, and believe me, it will be greatly appreciated. God bless.
Thank you for reading,
Margaret
