Why Wait for Death to Teach Us Love?

The Bottom Line I'm sorry to offer such drivel in a time of such pain, but I needed to write what I've written to make sense of things.

I see the bodies floating by
Bloated balloons in a septic sky
And in between thoughts of how? and why?
The helplessness of a child's cry

A million questions are left to seize on
as Katrina has washed away our reason
as the precursor of a deadly season
as thousands die at Nature's treason

Women scream as gunshots ring
after the floods have rushed and the winds did sing
what further anguish will these waters bring
to intensify the suffering

Disease and crime and mass despair
like crows take flight and crowd the air
and ravage those Nature chose to spare,
those forced to ponder the worth of prayer

As trucks roll in, please be forewarned
that - as thousands more must still be mourned
in toxic liquid coffins unadorned -
Life is not that to be scorned

What is here today can be tomorrow drowned
and vanish without a single sound
pray for the dead, those heavenbound
as again this country must rebound

We've grown accustomed to the sight of Hell
but let this be the warning bell
and listen to the solemn knell
of those forced too soon to say farewell

So kiss your father, and love your brother
and say kind things to one another
Help your sister, and hug your mother
and pray the Lord keep every other
