Why Wait for Death to Teach Us Love?
by mothermeatloaf | Sep 04 '05
I'm sorry to offer such drivel in a time of such pain, but I needed to write what I've written to make sense of things.

I don't know how it took me 6 years to find this but I'm glad I finally did.

You write touching pieces.

a beloved aunt

So kiss your father, and love your brother
and say kind things to one another
Help your sister, and hug your mother
and pray the Lord keep every other

Great words to keep in your heart

I didn't want to just read this without commenting, even if I'm only echoing what everyone else has said. This was a touching poem, one I think describes how a lot of people are feeling right now. Thanks for sharing.

A beautiful poem (Reply to this comment)

I felt so tremendously guilty of the past few weeks as I dealt with issues related to the move that seem so trivial in light of the enormity of what happened. Everything has seemed surreal since that day. You put the feelings into words better than I could have hoped to.

I don't think we can ever truly get a grip on something this enormous. This poem certainly represents an incomplete thought on my part as my feelings continue to swirl and change with every new day.

I'm so glad you found your way to my poem and felt that it was worth something to you. Always glad to see you around here. :)

Wow.

Something like this REALLY hits home when we have such a personal connection as you have. It is an absolute American nightmare. It serves to show us just how frail and vulnerable life as we know it is.

And it also reminds us to count our blessings once in a while, as well.

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Thank you, Teri! :) It's so hard to write about these things because the words seem so meaningless in light of the immense reality of the situation.

I'm glad you appreciated the poem.

Always good to see you in the comment section!

I'm glad you felt that way, Patricia. It's a lesson I constantly force myself to remember when my 4 year old sets me to yelling, or a family member p!sses me off, or any other little thing that, viewed myopically, blinds us from what TRULY matters - that we are here and have only this one opportunity (life) to love one another as best we can.

Thanks for stopping by! It's always good to hear from you.

A Tear- (Reply to this comment)
by Granniemose
One of many I have shed as I watched CNN. This poem is beautifully written and obviously dictated by the heart. It makes us all stop and think. I have been praying that our neighbors in Biloxi when we lived there three yeas ago have made it through - although i doubt that they did. I hoped they evacuated, although they had ridden out so many horrific storms, that I think a lot of them thought they could ride out this one.
There was a 30 foot wall of water that surged through during the hurricane and wiped out most of the area where my daughter and I were living.

This is beautifully written, Mike.

Hi Angela ~

I wished the same. I also wish all of these negative hate-spewing celebrities and politicians would take a moment from pointing out how badly the relief effort is going and open up their BOTTOMLESS wallets. Does anyone disagree that between sports figures and Hollywood, we can't raise $1 billion??? At what point do these folks who've been gifted these WEALTHY lives have a responsibility to give back to the only country where actors make more than doctors? (I'm probably wrong about being the ONLY country, but you get my drift.)

I know many have kicked in, but, relatively speaking, so little has been done save blasting the president and other administrators.

They'll have their day - and rightly so - but does it matter at ALL right now, for christ's sake, whose fault it is?

JUST HELP.

Thank you for your comments. You've inspired me to write a novel, apparently! LOL

Even here in Indiana (where I'd rather be than any other place on earth)... (Reply to this comment)

...we have our tornados and the Madrid faultline, so life as we know it can be fragile anywhere.

Weatherwise, our portion of Katrina came in the form of an increase in windiness (but not drastic) and a heavy rainshower. At least, this is what came to the Anderson area.

It's still hard to believe how much more than that was thrown at the people in the South.

This poem was far from being drivel, and I have a couple of writing sites where I'm sharing links to writings such as yours.

Hugs!

Just wanted to clarify that I thought the whole poem was wonderful, it was just that that one particular line stuck out as particularly brilliant...

Hang in there, eventually we'll all sleep better again. As for the praying, my general philosophy is sort of "can't hurt, might help..." I'm not hugely religious or faith filled but I always hope there is something.

Hope that made sense.

Hi Mike,

What a beautifully written poem you have shared with all of us. Tragedies such as this and your heart-felt poem do serve to remind us just how fleeting and fragile life is and how important it is to share love with one another at every opportunity.

God Bless you and your family, Mike. Hope all is well with you.

Thanks, Sara. I, too, have lost sleep thinking about the enormity of it all and I had to include that line because I wonder what good it does. I wonder if I'm fooling myself into believing I'm helping by praying or if I'm just trying to feel better about myself.

What horrible times, these.

Thank you so much for you kind words and I'm glad at least one line held worth for you.

Great poem and this line really struck a chord for me: those forced to ponder the worth of prayer. Our family was able to donate some money to the Red Cross but it didn't seem like much compared to the immensity of the disaster. I've been having trouble sleeping thinking about it all and I've spent some of that time praying and at the same time wondering just what good that is doing. So... thanks. You put it better than I ever could have.
