My favorite Beatles songs (Reply to this comment)
by gordo05
My 20 favorite Beatles songs are some of the softer, quieter songs that they wrote, and some are true rock songs. Some are a little more "obscure" while others are some of their big hits.

These are not in any particular order. For example, I have always loved Yes it Is which was first released as the B-side to Ticket to Ride. It features some of The Beatles' most complex and dissonant three-part vocal harmonies and showcases George Harrison's early use of volume pedal guitar. There is a muscial interlude in the song where George Martin (the other Beatle) plays a recorder. The vocal harmonies are truly amazing.

The opening chord in A Hard Day's Night has always intrigued me. There have been academic papers written about the opening chord to the song. The chord is actually a combination of George Harrison playing an Fadd9 on his 12-string Rickenbacker, while John plays Fadd9 in 1st position on a 6-string acoustic guitar (a Gibson J-160) while Paul plays a high D at the 12th fret of the D string of his Hofner bass. To top it all off, the genius of George Martin rounds out the sound with a D2-G2-D3 combination played on a Steinway Grand Piano.

Another of my favorites is from the Let It Be album - Across the Universe. The words are magnificent.

My all-time favorite "rock" song by the Beatles is Get Back. Another pure rock is Sgt. Pepper's Loney Hearts Club Band - the song, not the album.

I really like a number of the songs George Harrison contributed to the group - including Something, Here Comes the Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The more acoustic version of WMGGW released by George Martin on the Love album is pure genius.

The Let It Be album, while not one of their greatest, has a number of classic blues-oriented songs - particularly For You Blue. It's pure Mississippi blues with lots of nice slide guitar.

Blackbird - from the White Album and Yesterday are both fine examples of the musical creativity of Paul. While Paul was the main author of these, there is another - If I Fell - that has the same feel - but sources indicate that John was the author of If I Fell. In an interview with Playboy in 1980, Lennon said the song "shows I wrote sentimental love ballads, silly love songs, way back then."

No Reply from the Beatles for Sale album is another example of great harmonies. There is another song on that album - Every Little Thing - which is a great song - but the Beatle's version is a little too slow - especially after hearing the version from the self-titled album by Yes - their very first. The Yes version is really worth a listen, for those of you who may not have heard it. Another better version of a Beatles' song is Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help From My Friends.

Another Beatles song that - in my humble opinion - is performed better by another group is Help. The version by Deep Purple brings a lot more passion to the song -- it's slower and I think brings the right tempo to the words, which are after all - a cry for Help.

Think for Yourself - from Rubber Soul - is the first time I've heard anyone use the fuzz bass. I love this one. Norwegian Wood, from the same album, is another favorite.

Revolution is a song that captures the angst of a generation.

HI! I HAVE to join this write off! How can I do that? My dad was a musician/hippie and I grew up with Beatle songs as opposed to lullabyes!! Why didn't I think of this myself? :) Great review, by the way!

Seriously, it has not exactly had a lot of support so far. I could use a bit of help over here.

Hmmm...

Pledges for entries? I feel like a PBS station manager now, except I have no nice gifts (such as CDs and whatnot) for those who participate...just a bit of IS if you post in General Music Reviews....

A month? You need to get started, then.

Alex,

I don't usually do write-offs, but I wouldn't miss out on this one. I'll post something in a couple of days after taking a cruise through my memories in my yellow submarine...
