I picked up a copy of "Ruby the Copycat" while student teaching a second grade class. The bright, comical illustrations jumped out at me right from the start. The story was just as engaging. This short, fictional story tells the tale of Ruby, a girl who copies her classmates and teacher, but learns in the end that she, too, is an interesting person. The book has a comedic air to it; both the illustrations and story-telling style charm any reader into a smile. I have read this book to a few classes of children who thoroughly enjoyed the book. My Literature in Education class enjoyed it as well; many of my classmates read it to their own students after I introduced this book to them. It is a great book to read to young children about self-esteem, without a tiresome, preachy storyline.
