How I Can Become A One Man Band For ( a little) Fun and Profit

Pre-record your backgrounds, make space for your solos, and you, too, can be a cost-effective alternative for small to medium sized groups, particularly for seniors.

Sound system (Reply to this comment)

Enjoying your articles. Tell me, what kind of sound system do you use for these? Understand BIAB running on a laptop, or maybe burn tracks onto laptop...

Beyond that, I presume you need to "plug in" to something to amplify the laptop sound, and then the question: do you mic yourself and let the mix come through as the finished product, or do you play with "live sound" and speaker back-up?

I play trombone and am starting on something similar (see www.gilestes.com for BIAB samples). I am sound system challenged in my knowledge and would rather gather info and make an informed decision as opposed to learning by my mistakes.

Thanks and I look forward to your reply...

I read your piece about becoming a one man band. I agree with most of it. I have been doing the one man band thing since 1980. I just wanted to add one thing. While doing a show for Celebrity Cruise Lines last summer my cd player got destroyed. My superviser suggested I put all my background music on an IPOD. i had never used one before. When I got off the ship I went shopping. I bought an 80gb IPOD classic. I made setlists and uloaded songs to it. Turns out it has been the best system I have used to date for my set lists. It has a 2" screen , so there is no problem in seeing the entire set and chosing what I want to play from them. The sets dont have to be replaced like they so when a CD or a cassette wears out. Just for your information!

Kind of reminds me of this scene in the movie "El Mariachi". The mariachi goes into a bar looking for a place where he can play. The bartender tells him "Why pay one musician when he can have a whole band for the same money?" The bartender nods to a guy sitting in the corner, who gets up, sets up a Yamaha keyboard and presses one single button as mindless synthesized tunes fill the bar...

Well...I got a chuckle out of it...

Best,
