TheHorrorMan's Top Ten Favorite Slasher Movies
Sep 08 '05
The Bottom Line As someone who has watched many slasher films, take my word that these are some of the best. Be sure to give them a look if you're a fan.
The slasher film is a huge a part of the horror genre. If we didn't have slasher films, then we wouldn't have some of the best horror movies ever made. Here I have compiled a list of my top ten favorite slasher films of all-time. Keep in mind these are strictly slasher movies and not films from any other subgenre of horror. If you are looking for my top ten favorite horror movies, you can check out my other epinion on that topic. Some of the movies you see here will be on that list however. These movies may not be top-notch productions, but when it comes to being a good cheesy slasher film, they deliver the goods.
So here they are, from one slasher fan to another, my top ten favorite slasher films of all-time.
10.) PROM NIGHT (1980) - Straight from the 80s (the decade of the slasher film) comes this Jamie Lee Curtis classic. As a group of High schoolers prepare for their big prom, one of them is preparing for their big murder spree. It all happens on, you guessed it, Prom Night. This movie is purely and simply a slasher film, full of blood, screaming teens, and a good surprise ending.
9.) ALONE IN THE DARK (1982) - When a power outage allows a group of mental patients to run free, a new doctor becomes their target. The patients believe that this new doctor has killed a former doctor who the patients got along with. The new doctor and his family must fight back to defend their lives against the brutal killers.
8.) MY BLOODY VALENTINE (1981) - A small town has no other choice but to cancel the annual Valentine's Day when a killer begins taking victims and leaving bloody hearts in heart-shaped boxes of candy. However, the kids of the town decide to have their own dance. One by one some of the kids are killed off by an uninvited guest wearing a coal miner's costume.
7.) TERROR TRAIN (1980) - A group of college students are locked on a train with a masked killer in this classic Jamie Lee Curtis film. As the killer takes out the partying students wearing the disguises of each victim, the New Year's Eve party is put on hold and instead the students must run for their lives. But there is only so far to run.
6.) FRIDAY THE 13th (1980) - A popular title among slasher films. Most people probably already know the story here. The original (Jason is not the killer) is set apart from the rest of the series in my opinion. Teens who have sex are the targets here, but this time, there is an actual motive.
5.) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (1981) - This is a great little sleeper featuring the older sister from the Little House on the Prairie television series. This movie claims to have some of the most bizarre murder scenes you will ever see and this is in no way a lie. There is a nice little twist to this one. Fans of the genre should check it out.
4.) A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) - Everyone knows Freddy Krueger! A slasher with four blades makes this the number four slasher movie on my list. The catch is here (for probably only few that don't know) is that Freddy kills his victims in their nightmares. Believe me, they aren't waking up. Check out Johnny Depp's first movie role as one of Freddy's victims.
3.) SCREAM (1996) - The modern classic of slashers. The killer in this one wears the popular ghostface Halloween mask. With this movie, Wes Craven once again made his name known to a new generation of horror fans and proved he still is a horror master. The first twelve minutes alone make this movie worth a view. It is some of the most brutal and most terrifying minutes in horror movie history.
2.) SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983) - Ricky has gone to camp Arawak for a few years now, but this year he brings his cousin Angela along. Angela is very quiet and only talks to few people. This causes many of the campers to pick on her and think she's weird. However, someone is killing off the cruel campers one by one. This movie is one of the most enjoyable to watch in my opinion and the very last scene is something you will never forget.
1.) HALLOWEEN (1978) - The slasher of all slasher films is of course John Carpenter's classic. Michael Myers is the face of evil and the greatest slasher figure to ever make an appearance in a film. Many other slasher films followed in its footsteps but only very few even come close to it. For anyone who hasn't seen it, DO!
Honorable Mentions:
APRIL FOOL'S DAY
CHILD'S PLAY
THE INITIATION
HELL NIGHT
THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW
SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT
Note: BLACK CHRISTMAS is considered by many to be a slasher film. However, I did not include it in this list for the fact that it is more of a suspense/thriller such as WHEN A STRANGER CALLS.
ALICE, SWEET ALICE is another film I did not include because it is more of a religious horror than a slasher film in my opinion.
