OK been a while since i wrote a review so here goes. History first tho. I am a Martin player when i have the funds hehe. Just sold a Martin DR. I was planning on sticking to my trusty Fender Strat but i missed having an acoustic to strum without the hassle of wires n amp. Not wanting to blow a big wad of cash i looked at a few low end acoustics on internet. Came up with the Washburn D10S.
Construction, solid spruce top which is important, laminated mahogany back and sides which look solid. not the painted brown stuff you get on real cheap laminate models, mahogany neck. Back sides and neck are all gloss never been keen on satin finished guitars. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, ebony fingerboard would be nice but not an option at this price bracket. Nice binding and round pearl fret markers, new ones are diamond. Grover tuners which do their job well, minor half step tune up needed on the odd string, i tune almost every time i pick it up, doesnt always need it tho and holds tune well in play.
The important bit, sound. I only played two of these, the display model i thought i was getting and the one in a box they gave me, but based on the reviews here I'm guessing they all sound a little different. The display model was nice n bassey. I took mine home and immediately changed strings to elixirs as i swear by them. The high B&E were a bit bright for a start but once strings were played in everything balanced out nicely. Bass is nice but not overpowering, the sound overall isn't bad for the price I'm sure as it ages it will improve, but fine for bashing out John Mayer tunes even a little finger picking!
Playability is good too, nice spacing between strings intonation is also spot on. Action was a little high on mine just filed bridge down and i did a little truss rod tweak to set neck up as it should be. Neck is rounded nice and narrow not the v neck like some ooo's electric like in feel, more strat thal les paul.
Overall a recommended buy. I am not a beginner just not a guitar snob hehe. I would recommend this for a beginner or amateur home strummer. I have been playing 14 years (I'm 29) and know what to look for in a guitar.
