I went to see this movie with my 15-yo son (we love animation). We especially love great animation, and this was great fun. Okay, sappy ending, but hey, it's a kids movie. Watch for the little things that will make you giggle after the movie is over. Remember the little annoying animal that seems to be ADD on crack? The one everyone tries to avoid? Listen to him very carefully on the beach. I'm still giggling. Watch the zebras. Don't miss the hypocondriacs. Or the hippos. Or the flamingos. Did I mention the tourists?
Trying to avoid spoilers: adults will laugh knowingly at Will.I.Am's character. If it is possible, the penguins are "sicker" than King Lemuel. The whole thing with the "thumbs" is just hilarious. We had a wonderful time.
The animation is very well done here. Animals move naturally whether they are standing on 2 legs or 4. I enjoyed how they emphasized the difference between the New York animals and the wild ones without being overstated. They switch back and forth between anthromorphizing and acting natural without any shock. Emotions are large, but subtlety is handled well also. Shading is natural. The music is wonderful. I could have stood another opportunity to "Move it, Move it", though.
The large laughs are large, and sophisticated enough for parents, teens and itty-bittys. You will enjoy this movie.
