Green Day’s American Idiot Tour Indianapolis, IN - September 12, 2005
Sep 14 '05
The Bottom Line If Green Day is coming to your city or close for the tour... get tickets, FLOOR tickets, they're worth every penny.
Before I came to know Green Day I had always known who they were, or at least their songs, but didnt at the same time. I had heard their songs played on the radio and everything, I just never knew who the songs were written by. Since breaking out of my music shell, Green Day has come to be one of my favorite bands. Closely running with the punk/rockers from Chicago called Fall Out Boy that Ive come to enjoy immensely.
Leading up to the concert I was so excited that I could have probably peed my pants. When Monday finally came, I didnt know what to do with myself. I dont have any classes on Monday, and the friend I was going with didnt get out of school until 2:50, so I basically twiddled my thumbs until 3:00 came around. I picked Adam up, went up to Circle Centre mall and ate a very good helping of Chili-cheese fries and vanilla root beer at Johnny Rockets. For future reference, eating chili-cheese fries right before a concert, especially one that has potentiality for mosh pits to break out frequently and lots of jumping up and down, is not the wisest thing to do. I found that out the hard way about an hour into the show. After eating, we went to the main Conseco gates and got in line waiting for the gates to open. We passed the time by playing some hacky sack, and the gates finally opened around 6:00pm.
Jimmy Eat World opened up with a 45 minute opening set to prepare the fans for Green Day. They didnt waste any time either. Opening up the show with the head shattering Pain, they did a couple more songs off of their newest album Futures and wasted absolutely no time moving from song to song as they rounded out with their bigger hits. The lighting effects for Jimmy Eat Worlds segment were pretty cool and they were really setting the mood for the main segment of the show. As much as I like Jimmy Eat World, I didnt really jump around a lot so that I could save energy for Green Day. There were a bunch of people that were though.
Once the stage crew got everything set-up for the main show, and before Green Day took the stage, a lonely little drunken pink bunny stumbled across the stage dancing around, signaling the start of the concert. Once 8:00 hit, Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt took the stage. Its GREEN DAY!!! They kicked off with the big adrenaline pumper single of 2004, American Idiot to get people jumping and from there the show was underway. They went through the story like 5-part segment Jesus of Suburbia as Armstrong danced across the stage getting the crowd into it more than they already were. From there they went through some more of the American Idiot album with Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, St. Jimmy, and Wake Me Up When September Ends.
I actually only got to hear the last 30 seconds of Wake Me Up When September ends because my friend was going to pass out, so I went up with him to make sure he didnt pass out on the way to get something to drink. We were on the floor and were only 10-20ft from the stage depending on how much people were moshing. It got pretty hot down there, as I was soaked in sweat before they finished American Idiot, which was what they opened with. I was close enough to the stage at one point to shake Armstrongs hand when he was leaning over the platform singing.
Even though the tour is for the American Idiot album, Green Day knows how to please the fans. They also did some fan favorites like Longview, Brain Stew/Jaded, Basket Case, and When I Come Around. Near the end of the show the guys did a cover of Queens We Are the Champions that led into Billie Joes closing solo with Good Riddance.
Green Day knows how to put on one hell of a show, and its one that will be remembered for sure. The lighting effects and pyrotechnics were off the chain, including ear banging explosions, jumping flames, and confetti that was shot out into the crowd at the end of the show. They also made some dreams come true when they picked three musicians out from the crowd to play a little melody as the band looks on. How many times do you get to go onstage and actually play with the band? Its not very common, so that part of the show was an unforgettable experience, even for the people not on stage. Billie Joe cracked me up when the kid that was picked to play his guitar started to walk off the stage, and Billie goes get back here with my f*cking guitar! Then he tells the kid that he can keep it and he gives him a hug and salutes the crowd. Talk about pimp.
Overall
This concert was one of the most amazing experiences in my life, and like I pointed out in the first paragraph, emotions were flying through Conseco. Jimmy Eat World did a great job of opening up for a great band, and the whole experience was unforgettable. The show wasnt sold out, but youd never guess as big as Conseco Fieldhouse is, and its a shame that those tickets went unsold. September 12, 2005 was a good day, a very good day.
