This sounds like a great experience for your son. My son,John is 22 and was just recently diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, so all of this stuff is new for me and I appreciate any and all information.

I'm amazed at how many moms posted here, you really touched all of us who have children, not just moms dealing with autism.

Best of all, you found a program so wonderful for your Alex, and to top it all off it was FREE! Lucky girl!

Loved the review, keep up the good work :) Suzanne

This sounds like an incredible experience for Alex. But I have to admit, I had that Mommy nausea in my gut when you described him going out on the board. You are a very brave Mommy to let him have this experience, and you deserve applause yourself!!!

...I have never ever heard of this. This would be perfect for my son. He has always been a different child in the water. Once he's in the water, he has all the confidence in the world. Thank you so much for sharing this information.

What a great experience. I never would have thought of it. Will he continue doing this or is it a one time thing?

The notion of surfing sounds insane to me (probably because I'm from a landlocked state), but what an experience for the kids! I'm sure my Alex would like to try something like this, but my one concern with him would be that he is hyper sensitive to water splashing on his face or head (which I think is part of the PDD-NOS). I imagine he'd get over it if he had the chance one he saw other kids doing it, though...

Thanks for sharing this!

I know they did surf camps this year in NY, NJ, and Virginia Beach!!

The kids were all ranges! Younger than Alex even and I know one of the kids who goes to his school is 15 and he did it too. It was definitely a wide range of differently abled kids.

I'm still "high" from watching Alex do it!!! He's so brave!!!!

Do you know what the age range was of the kids when there, were they mostly younger kids or older ones too?

Surfers Healing makes the rounds on thew newscasts here quite often. If I remember correctly they have it several times a year, or so it seems.

Are they expanding to the east coast - or was it a one time deal?

It is incredible how someone with a simple idea can enrich so many other lives. Surfers Healing sounds like a wonderful organization, especially providing these activities for free. I am glad it was such a positive experience for your son!
