The Bottom Line When I was young and romantic, I loved writing Love Sonnets about imagined situations. This is one of them.

Loser's Game

A very foolish game it was we played
When we were young and thought we were so wise.
I wonder. Was it wisdom when I prayed
To find Eternity within your eyes?

Is anything eternal, ever, dear?
Your eyes so quickly turned to someone new,
They taught me, and it was so very clear,
That winning ended every game for you.

Now you've lost each dream you had attained,
While mine are stored where memories abide.
The passing years have left you worn and drained,
Yet, in my dreams, I've kept you always by my side.

A foolish game, indeed -- just count the cost;
The Loser won the stakes the Winner lost
