The Bottom Line Ubu Ale and 46'er IPA are worthy additions to local beer drinking choices.
Ubu Should Drink Local Whenever Im at a loss for something to drink at my favorite beer cooler, I look for something new, something different, or an old favorite. As such, I usually find something to try, and I will always favor a local over something big and macro. As such I was pleased with the recent introduction (this week anyway) of beers from the Lake Placid Craft Brewing Company into my neck of the Jersey woods. The brewery operates a pub and brewery in Lake Placid and a brewing concern in Plattsburgh. They currently offer 4 brews year-round (Ubu Ale, 46er I.P.A., Moose Island Ale, and Barkeater Amber Ale) and about 7 or so seasonals (a Porter, Stout, Pilsner, Hefeweizen, and others). So far, only the Ubu Ale and the 46er I.P.A. are available in bottles and the price is a welcome $6.99 in my area. Ubu Ale is their flagship product and described by the brewers as an English Strong Ale with a 7 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) rating. It pours to a dark red color with a nicely placed head of beer lace. The aroma is malty with a full flush of sweetness at first tasting. Theres a welcome shot of hops at the finish; a bit of a dry answer to the first touch of sweet. I liked it a lot; a flavorful ale with a pleasant finish. A lot of brews named after a dog dont hold up well (the beer is named for an owners Chocolate Labrador dog I believe) but Ubu Ale is a solid offering. Its very much a drinkable session beer to share with friends and conversation. It didnt knock my socks off (four stars), but I will buy it again. It would be a welcome ale for the fall chill.. Reportedly (on the brewerys Web site), this is an ale that former President Clinton enjoyed during a visit and had shipped back to the White House. 46er I.P.A. was more to my immediate liking as I much prefer IPAs/pale ales to any other offerings. It is named for the sturdy hikers who are able to walk/hike all 46 peaks within the greater Adirondacks which is no small feat of walking in the woods. It is described as an English style Pale Ale with Fuggles hops (and a 6 percent ABV rating). It pours to a very nice presentation of golden amber color with a great head of beer lace. The aroma is earthy, grassy and welcoming for hops lovers. The taste is something to savor; vibrant, solid shots of hops abound, coupled with a malt bottom at the finish. A pretty well balanced IPA/pale ale with a nice grapefruit-like zing, this is an ale I will certainly return to from time to time (three stars). It will not overwhelm novice hops lovers and has enough for most hop fiends to enjoy as well. But of these brews are fairly substantial and will stand up to most pub food (burgers, pizza and the like) or just an afternoon in an Adirondack chair watching the leaves turn and fall. This is a local for those fortunate enough to live within the Lake Placid region of New York State. It certainly appears to be worth the trip if one is in the area. 14 Mirror Lake Drive Lake Placid, NY 12946 (518) 523-3813 Sources www.ubuale.com |
