Big Day Out 2-Pop Disaster Tour-6//4/2002, Saratoga Springs, NY

The Bottom Line Go see Green Day
This concert was a while ago, but I remember it pretty well because a concert this big doesn't just happen as often as other shows do and Green Day and Blink 182 were my two favorite bands at the time.
Being a day during the school week, my friends and I literally walked out of school, hoped in my mom's car, and were off for the hour drive up to Saratoga.
We got to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) around 4. This was only my second concert (1st after seeing Weezer a few months before in the Pepsi Arena, where we have a college basketball and minor league hockey team play).
There was a side stage where some bands were warming up the crowd. We didn't listen to them, but instead decided to go get our merch stuff. Four bands played, but the only ones I remember hearing about the next day were Cold (who would come out with that Stupid Girl song in 03) and 2 Skinnie J's.
Around 5, after the bands had warmed up, they let the people onto the field (the set up is about 100 seats down in front, bleachers up high, and a field REALLY faraway). We had a chance to get seats, but we settled for the field before so we could have a big crowd with us.
First up was Saves the Day. I had seen them open for Weezer and had liked them, but I had counted on hearing Jimmy Eat World (Middle, Sweetness, Bleed American), who had opened for them the first half of the tour. Still, Saves the Day wasn't bad, and they played the one song I liked (At Your Funeral).
The waits were horrible. It was about an hour inbetween each band. Finally, a pink rabbit came out on stage with a bong. After taking a few hits and downing a beer, he left.
Several minutes later, Green Day came on, and the place was rocking. Opening with Maria, Billie Joe won the place over. After that, Tre started playing the drum intro to Longview and Billie Joe started yelling at the crowd.
And the show kept rolling. And the moments kept coming. Halfway through Hitchin' A Ride, Billie Joe held out a note for a minute and stopped the crowd so they would yell 1-2-3-4! with him.
Another highlight was hearing them play 2000 Light Years away (from Kerplunk) and Operation Ivy's Knowledge. And right about there was where the show turned weird.
After getting people from the crowd up to play in the band, three people dressed in costumes (a bee, a superhero, and something else) came up to play their "ska" song King For A Day and Shout. Wow.
After things settled down, Green Day just rolled through the set, playing mostly stuff from Dookie and Warning before finishing it off with When I Come Around. After smashing the drum, throwing the bass into one, and lighting it all on fire, it appeared that Green Day was over.
Not exactly.
Billie Joe came back on with his acoustic and started playing Time of Your Life. Wow. What a way to finish off a show.
After the last chords were played, we still realized that Blink still had to play. All I can say is that Green Day should've gone after.
Bombed out of their minds, Blink showed they should've opened up for Green Day, as there set was basically a best-of set (every single from Enema of the State and Take Off Your Pants And Jacket). They didn't engage the crowd and were couldn't sing for crap. The only highlights off the show was Travis' 80s style drum solo (I can't think of who it is off the top of my head) and "Dammit", the only song worth listening to. Big bummers were Mark and Tom screwing up every chorus in Carousel, the amount of new stuff in the setlist, and the Grandpa Song, which is the most disturbing song ever. Though I used to be a Blink 182 fan, I can't say I still enjoy their music anymore.
Overall, A+ for Green Day and D for Blink
