| soothsayer's Full Review: Power Archiver 2000 |
This is a great archiving and decompressing utility. It is one the best I’ve found after scouring the web. This software supports Zip, Rar, Ace, Arj, Jar, Zoo, Arc, Lha, Tar, Uue, and Cab files. PowerArchiver 2001 is shareware without time limits, or nag screens.
One is blown away with how easy it is to use this software; it is integrated with the Windows 9x Explorer shell, with drag-and-drop functionality. Scripts can be used to automate your archiving process, and archives can be sent by email with a click of a mouse.
There is a tool to convert between archive formats, and an integrated tool to help you figure out what a mysterious archive is based on. In case you find some files suspicious, you may associate a virus checker with PowerArchiver to automatically scan files.
Creating an archive is straightforward and easy. One begins by creating an archive, adding in files, and saving the archive. Going further, one can turn the archive into a self-extracting one in case you need to send it to someone who does not have any decompressing utility. A twist on the self-extracting format is available allowing the archive to be turned into a professional quality installation package that creates custom menus, icons, and folders.
Help files are available for every part of PowerArchiver so no one is left puzzling over what a button does.
Configuring PowerArchive is easy, with options centralized under one main menu. All aspects of the software can be customized, from Windows Explorer shell integration, to the types of files supported. To personalize your copy of PowerArchive, software skins can be used. PowerArchiver also has versions available in other languages beside English.
This software is pretty good. It is worth it when you can get nearly all formats together into one package. It is definitely worth it when it supports the elusive Microsoft Cab file format that one may have to deal with on occasion (rare) as well as Tar and Gzip files commonly found in Unix systems.
PowerArchiver 2001 is a 1.4Mb download, the latest version (as of this writing) is version 7.02.08, updated August 24, 2001. The website to download the software and skins is www.powerarchiver.com
