Thank you for sharing this- (Reply to this comment)

You're right, most of us that can see take our eyesight for granted. My grandfather had the same condition- twice (and more than 15 years apart!!). He was lucky and now, because of surgery, can see even without his glasses!!
I'm glad things have worked out for you better than worse- and hopefully we'll see more reviews from you soon!!!

I just didn't know.
Keep the faith and I will have my eyes checked out. I have been finding a bit more trouble seeing than I have in a while.
Thanks,
Phil

It is a daily struggle, Darla.
My situation is not nearly as dire as others. But I find it very challenging none-the-less.
Thanks for your warm words.

As a person who has had a lifelong struggle with vision, I thank you for all this valuable information. And I am so glad that your vision has returned. Few folks with relatively normal vision realize what a struggle it can be.
Regards,
Darla

Re: Wow, I'm speechless! (Reply to this comment)
by gungian
According to my eye docs, there are two basic types of retinal detachments. One is the "traumatic" which is most often the result of a blow or jar to the head. This is the type often suffered by athletes.
The second type is referred to as "spontaneous". Ah, that would be mine.
Thanks for checking in, Claudia.

I always thought that a detached retina was associated with some sort of blow or injury. What an amazing story and I'm glad to hear that you've weathered the storm, but what an ordeal it must have been.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with us and, hopefully, we heed your advice!

It is certainly good to be back, HfO.
I heartily second your opinion on protecting our eyesight. I value it even more now that it has been compromised.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

So glad.... (Reply to this comment)
by heidifromoz
...that our technology today can do such great things to correct vision problems. Just think, not so long ago people like us would have lost our sight outright - yes I have had torn retinas which were fortunately able to be corrected with laser surgery. I agree totally that one needs to have these things monitored on an ongoing basis - our sight is too precious to risk losing. Glad too that you are back and writing for Eps, which was not the same without your humour and insight.

Perhaps you can be part of the medical field after all :)
Great essay that I'm sure will encourage and help others on the importance of keeping a check on the peeks.
Now as far as that comment earlier down Hmmm!
Love you too!

I have missed reading my Epinions friends, Virginia.
The membership of our cyber-community has waxed and waned. But I hope to get back to speed with the lives, loves and even losses of some great Epinionators.

I do intend to slowly ramp up my rating and writing. But my eye does tire easily and I certainly do not want to risk "the darkness" again.

I am so very sorry this happened to you, but am glad that things are better now. Gosh, we never know, do we, when we get up in the morning what may happen in the course of an hour, or even a minute? Thank heaven for your lovely wife and her dedication toward getting you to a doctor.
You have been missed a lot -

I knew you had eye surgery but really didn't know the extent of what you went through and how suddenly it came up...That in itself is so scary.I'm so glad that your vision is corrected to the extent that it is and that your recovery will mean we will be seeing and reading you more often on the site ...You've been missed.
Take care and may good health be in your future from now on
