Armored tires for road warriors

Written: Nov 02 '01
The Bottom Line: If the idea of stopped at the side of the road to fix a puncture flat doesn't thrill you, go with Kevlar lined tires!

It's hard to believe that more tire manufacturers haven't starting making road tires with Kevlar lining. Performance offers the Forte Kevlar road tire (with yellowish side wall)and the all-black Forte Pro Kevlar.

My experience with Kevlar started a few years ago when I rode an old Bianchi mountain bike with "city slicker" tires on all my road rides. After getting 3 flat tires in a week, I found Kevlar-lined tires at Performance Bike. If figured "if kevlar can stop a bullet, it can probably prevent a flat". Sure enough, I've logged thousands of miles since then and other than a few pinch flats, I've had only one puncture flat (somehow a large staple penetrated my side wall).

I'll probably never buy another non-Kevlar lined tire. If other tire manufactures ever catch on, I'll have a choice. Until then, my only debate is Forte Kevlar or Forte Pro Kevlar.
