Being in Southern California, I was familiar with Second Spin's retail stores but it seems that their website is gaining more and more popularity these days. Like any used CD store you have the option to buy or sell. This is cool because you can even sell your used CDs through their website. So if you are hard up for some extra cash, sell those CDs that are collecting dust in your closet - Second Spin will buy them!
Their buying guidelines can be viewed from this page on their site:

They will not only purchase your used CDs, but they will also purchase DVDs and VHS tapes. To collect your payment they will either issue you a credit or cut you a check. I would only recommend selling to them in bulk quantities though because you have to pay the shipping of the items yourself and they don't pay you much over what the shipping costs. So it wouldn't be worth it to sell them one or two CDs.
The website itself is very user friendly. It has the typical search feature so you can jump right to the product your looking for or if you are just looking to browse, you can search by category. Another cool search feature is that you can search by price. Do you HAVE to buy a present for that bratty kid brother of yours? Don't worry, they have a ton of CDs under .99 that you can search through. (ha ha)
The first time I used their website I was looking to buy the DVD of "Boogie Nights". Well there are 2 different versions of this DVD and apparently Second Spin online doesn't know this. There is a regular 1 disc version which has a director's commentary and some extras, and there is a platinum version that has 2 discs and a bunch of bonus goodies. I was looking to buy the 2 disc DVD and Second Spin had the regular DVD listed as the platinum one. Being that they didn't have a picture of it (the two versions have different covers) I could only take their word that I was getting the Platinum edition. To my disappointment I got the regular DVD. However I didn't bother to return it, I saw the DVD was going for a few bucks more on Ebay than what I spend on it at Second Spin (which also proves the good value of this site). So I sold the DVD on Ebay, made a couple bucks and bought the platinum version on Ebay.
The second time I used Second Spin Online I bought a CD. Fortunately they had it in stock. I spent $5.99 on it when it was going for $7.99 on Ebay and $8.99 on Half.com. So I felt I got a good deal on the CD.
Shipping isn't too outrageous on this site either.
Standard shipping in the US:
CD or DVD = $2.25 (.25 each additional)
VHS = $3.00 (.50 each additional)
UPS Ground = $6.50 (.50 each additional)
UPS Blue = $12.00 ($1.25 each additional)
Priority mail in the US:
CD or DVD = $5.00 (.50 each additional)
VHS = $6.00 ($1.00 each additional)
UPS Ground = $7.00 (.50 each additional)
UPS Blue = $14.50 ($2.25 each additional)
They also offer shipping to Canada and International for different rates.
Other Cool site features:
- Personal favorites: you can list the artists you like the most and they'll notify you when they receive a new CD of that artist.
- Spin Dealer Program: this is their webmaster affiliates program. Basically if you link back to their site and someone clicks on your link to their site and buys something, you get a commission off that sale.
- Frequent Monthly Contests: Right now they're giving away a Sony 5 disc CD player and 10 free CDs.
The site is user friendly with a friendly shopping cart. I had no problems checking out whatsoever. However I did come in contact with customer service at the end of my first transaction because my credit card was declined and I had to use another one. The service was fast, friendly, swapped the new card number out immediately and I received my DVD in about a week. The shipping time was very reasonable for the $2.25 I spent.
Bottom Line
As far as site features, it's pretty run of the mill but it's due to the cheap prices that I am a return customer. If you are not bothered by purchasing used items, they are a good website which is often cheaper and less hassle than Ebay. However they don't always have the items in stock that you are looking for. For instance right now I searched for "Boogie Nights" on DVD and they don't currently have any copies for sale. So when you can find your item, it can be a good site to buy from. Recommended to all.
