Thank you, Beth!! You always leave such thoughtful comments. I'm glad you liked the poem and I'm happy for you that it rings so true for you. I think I was inspired to write it after watching "13 Going on 30," which was much sweeter than I expected it to be. I was just overwhelmed with the sweetness of this friendship-turned-romance, and as the younger version of the best friend reminded me of Sam, I found myself ruminating on his and Rosie's relationshp and deciding it was the same thing, without the wrinkles brought about by either one searching for someone more exciting. And then I thought, "Gee, you don't get that in the movie at all..." So I wanted to draw a distinction, and indicate that this was a really important part of who Sam was. And Rosie, too, of course. Anyway, glad you liked it!

This is wonderful! (Reply to this comment)

And one of my favorites thus far. You've got such a terrific ability to just step into Tolkien's world, and your ease with rhyme is lovely.
I like the imaginative slant on this one -- it lends some great character development to Rosie. And I enjoyed your reflections on the ordinariness of love (from Tolkien and Montgomery). As someone who has been married for thirteen years to my best friend, I can really resonate with the notion of a beautiful, quiet, rock-solid, daily kind of love.
Yes, the movie goofed here as elsewhere with Sam. I had a notion that Jackson wanted to hint at a different kind of relationship between Sam and Frodo. Argh. Maybe because our age has a hard time understanding friendship, and an even harder time understanding the idea of a loyal and loving servant.
I hope you're collecting these poems somewhere. They're real gems!
