Michael Thurmond's Six Week Body Makeover - AVOID!
by sugarprincess | Oct 16 '05
I believe you will lose weight if you can stick to it, but I found the food too restrictive, the prep too involved, and the exercises not easily achievable.

Thyroid Problems (Reply to this comment)
by sheliarocs
My husband bought me this diet and I started it in October 2006. It wa horrible the first 2 weeks but after that I settled into a routine. I lost 45 pounds and 36 inches in 11 months!! I looked great, felt great and got a lot of compliments and I kept the weight off for 2 years, then it gradually started to creep back on even tho I had not changed my eating plan at all. I asked for help in the forums of the plan and was told to try this or that, however nobody would answer my question about thyroid issues and I felt I was blown off. After I had gained all the weight back plus and extra 10 pounds my dr did a thyroid panel and I am now hypothyroid and the wieght will not budge! My dr said the lack of salt in my eating plan may have contributed to my thyroid problems. I asked the 6 week forum moderator to help me tweak the plan to get the wieght back off due to the thyroid and I never got a response back nor does anyone answer me in the forums when I talk/ask about thyroid issues. I wondered if anyone else had thyroid issues after the plan and have been searching for info on it. I will say that once the weight started to fall off - I was amazed - not any more - I am HUGE! Bigger than I have ever been and the plan (I was a D) just stopped working for me even tho I still followed it to the letter.

6-week body makeover (Reply to this comment)
by grandmagreen
I don't know how this program will work for my husband and me, but my daughter bought it as a gift for us and tried it herself to make sure it works - and lost 12 pounds in 2 weeks! To those who complain about the prep; my daughter is a Manager at her business and has a 5-year old, a husband, a home and a cleaning business. She does ALL her "prep" on the weekends (Saturday or Sunday or both) and freezes what can be frozen for the entire week and stores the rest in Tupperware. I think if you want to do something bad enough, you will find a way to do it and if you don't want to do something, you'll find an excuse to complain about why it won't work. I'm looking forward to giving it a shot.

Hi-- I appreciated your comments and positive outlook. I just ordered the program and am a little hesitant to start it; only because of the dairy restrictions. I love cheese! And milk! I just wondered if you have any suggestions for resisting it and if you've found any good substitutions. (esp. for cheese) Any comments are helpful... thanks!!

It works - it's not a diet (Reply to this comment)
by diet_happy
Don't think of this as a diet, because it's not.
I have been on the plan about 6 weeks and have lost 20 pounds. I say this isn't a diet because it teaches you how you should be eating and makes you think before you even buy those processed foods to stick in your refrigerator or pantry. You feel good because you are losing weight and eating healthy.
Even when I leveled out at about 3 weeks and seemed to quit losing weight, I was still losing inches. Then the weight loss started again, a little slower but still losing.
If you want a diet - don't try this. But if you want to actually read the material in the book and make yourself think about what you are putting in your mouth/body then DO IT !!!!. I didn't actually start the plan until about 2 weeks after I received my package. I read through all of the material and started planning meals because I really wanted to be ready for this.
You'll be eating healthy and feeling much better.
It's an eating/healthy lifestyle plan.
As for the complaints about the time of preparation, try fixing twice the amount of portions and take the second one for lunch the next day. And while you are fixing dinner, go ahead and get your breakfast ready for the next morning.
If you plan your meals, you can be out of the kitchen in 30 minutes from the time you start your preparation.
I'm loving my new outlook on food.
Just for a treat, we are now eating out once a week at our favorite restaurants.

It's working great for me so far... (Reply to this comment)
by anegale
I bought it when I saw it on TV. Yeah, so it took a bit of time to assemble and get acquainted with all the information in the booklet and yes, you have to shop for food and prepare your meals, but I've enjoyed all of that and have lost 5 lbs. in 4 days. I don't have that much to lose compared to some and have not gotten around to the Body Sculpting part of it yet either, although it looks easy and I'm excited to add that to the routine, but I feel better, lighter and am seeing results. I think that anything that is not outright harmful for the body WILL work if you DO it. I've done many diets and this is the most rewarding and easy to follow so far. I'll stick with it and have already referred my friends to the plan. DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAY-SAYERS. Try it yourself and come to your own conclusion, I say.

I am on the 6 week body make over now and I thought it would be great because you get more food than WW. Well, so far I hate it. I can't imagine being on a diet that dosen't allow you to eat salt or milk products. The food is tastless and I miss my coffee with a splash of low fat milk. I also find it hard to stop what I am doing to grab yet another meal. I plan to finish the 6 weeks but this is not for me.

I disagree with the original post. I guess it is all perspective.

I have done the six week body makeover. It does work..it does take work..because you eat non processed food six times a day. So you do have to think ahead and plan..come up with things that work for you. It really is like a nutrition boot camp.
so, for the lazy dieter...it would be no go. but if you want to really fix your metabolism..start eating a balanced healthy whole food diet and learn how to exercise to get in shape for life? then it is a very good program.

the big plus about it..is you eat all the time..you're not hungry..cravings go away...health problems vanish. It is pretty great.
Parting thoughts... this program works for me because I was at the point where I wanted to figure out how to be able to eat and not gain weight..and to be healthy and in shape for life. I tried counting calories..i did so faithfully was hungry all the time.. and never lost but a few pounds. So..if you have determination and want to try something that works.. this will.

NOT recommended If you love food... (Reply to this comment)
by dove1208
I tried this kit and would like to share my experience. My goal was to lose approx. 15 lbs. My stats were: 5'7" - 148 lbs. Goal: 135 lbs.

I love food and believe it is one of the pleasures of life. I love to cook too.

I found the preparation on this method to be daunting. My Sundays were used up preparing meals to last me until Wednesday only to start all over again Wed night. The kicker is that the food, no matter how many Mrs. Dash's and many other spices I used, the food was missing salt and taste.

The plan also eliminates all dairy, fat and wheat. My teeth started hurting and I ended up with 2 root canals soon after my 6 weeks were over. Coincidence? Maybe, but lack of dairy, couldn't have helped. I felt my body was drawing calcium from my teeth and this is my intuitive view. Sure, I know broccoli and other foods have dairy but how much of these vegetables must you eat to get equivalent to just eating dairy?

Then, saute'ing in unsalted broth was another requirement - not the same, believe me.

The exercises were so awkward with those stretch bands, my daughter whose an experienced and fit young woman, gave up trying to help me.

After all of this, I ended up in 6 weeks losing 4 lbs - to 144. It wasn't worth the torture for me. I generally ate healthy before the diet so perhaps that's why my body rejected this diet. Elimination of major food groups is not a sound way of losing weight. As a peri-menopausal woman, no salt, no healthy oils and no dairy was a suicide mission for me. Not recommended.

I bought this program and I find it amazing. Yes in the start the diet can be a bit restricting, but I found if you cheat a little you still get the same results but make it easier to deal with the limits in the diet set for you. For instance, it told me two egg whites in the morning, I would just have two eggs instead of the four I would usually eat. Instead of not using salt I would use just a pinch of sea salt. Healthier for you and with much more flavor it really doesn't push you off track with this diet. Also since you were complaining that everything tasted bland, have you ever heard of Mrs. Dash? There are no calories, carbs, nothing in it to side track you from your diet, and it tastes great, there are many seasoning flavors Mrs. Dash makes, the company, and they can all be used to flavor your foods for this diet. I found the prep really easy, I get my meat (chicken, red meat, fish, whichever you had) and would find the easiest way to cook it, prep a weeks worth of it, and do the same with the veggies, and get a big amount of the fruits I needed. I found it all very easy to prepare and stick to.

Also I found the way they set up the exercises amazingly simple to understand and do. They tell you exactly which ones you need to do for your body type and how you want to look, they give you the equipment you need and an instructional DVD to watch that tells and shows you step by step how to perform the actions. And the main exercise was to walk for an hour a day five days a week and just to keep your heart at the specific rate you needed which I tracked easily with a watch and counting my heart beats. It's even easier to track with a heart rate monitor, and you can find cheap ones. It's not like they are making you run, and most people will get that amount of time walking in their day to day life, at work and home.

To be completely honest I cannot see any reason for you to be complaining and I think that you must be quite lazy to give the excuses you have as to why this product "should be avoided". Sorry. I hope no one else who is serious about losing weight takes your comment to heart. I've lost 60lbs and counting on this program and I've been doing it for about 3 months now.

Not a diet, but a new eating plan (Reply to this comment)
by twalls416
I didn't have a lot of weight to lose, but the older I get the more I seemed to be stacking it on. Having both a thyroid problem as well as rheumatoid arthritis, the last thing I need to do is carry around more weight and visiting the doctor twice a year I kept noticing the scale inching its way up, up, up. I figured that in another year I'll be turning 50 and if I don't get it under control now, I probably never will.
Realization of the increased weight gain was the first step to my taking control. I saw an ad for the Six Week Body Makeover and without hesitation decided I would give it a shot. I tell myself it's not a diet, but a new way of eating healthy. The first two weeks I followed the plan to a "T." I found some of the foods a little bland and going salt-free (or low salt) was difficult. Less sweets were easier since I'm not a big sweet-eater to begin with. Although I knew I was losing some weight, I was afraid to step on the scale because I didn't want to be disappointed. After three weeks I took the plunge and stepped on up only to find I had lost 15 of the desired 25 lbs I was aiming for. What a breeze and I have continued this same pattern since November 1, 2010...yes, right smack dab during the holidays. Although I attended many parties and hosted a big Christmas eve dinner, I pretty much stuck with the plan and have continued to lose weight equaling two dress sizes smaller. I'm no longer sluggish from heavy foods during the day, I feel healthier, and I sleep better at night. I'm going shopping this weekend so I'll have something to wear next week!
Thank you Six Week Body Makeover for an amazing program.

GREAT Program (Reply to this comment)
by rdonath
Sugarprincess if you thought the foods on this program were tasteless, then you didn't give it even half a try.

If you go online to their website, there is a very large assortment of excellent recipes of for chicken, beef, seafood, carbohydrates, vegetables, desserts, etc. Nothing boring or tasteless about it.

I've on the program just over 32 weeks and as of this morning (12/7/10) I've lost 88 lbs. THANK GOD I didn't avoid this program. I started at 252 and this morning I was at 164. 9 more lbs to goal weight.

No, it's not a magic bullet, and yes you have to work the Plan...but I'm here to tell you this plan works GREAT!!! It's not just a weight loss plan though, it's a whole program to learn how to eat healthy. Extra added salt and sugar? Don't need it. I've got herbs, spices, and no salt added (NSA) On-Plan flavorings from Mrs. Dash. Go ahead and eat your salt, you can have the high blood pressure...I'm done with it and off all 3 B.P. meds and off my cholesterol med...with the blessings from my doctor.

My husband and I first tried Michael Thurmond's Six Week Body Makeover 5 years ago before we were married. I lost 30 pounds in 6 weeks and my husband lost 40... As the years progressed and babies followed, I became over weight again... So I pulled out the magic box and my husband and I have been on the diet for 6 weeks again, and I have lost 25 pounds and my husband is at 27 pounds... This time around we haven't followed the diet to a T as we did before... We have been having a giant sweetie once a week and with our crazy schedule we end up having fast food at least once a week... We keep up on the snacks and drink the amount of fluids that the diet requires... We haven't even cut out salt (used minimally and in seasonings)... I've come up with my own recipes just following the guide lines of how many carbs, protein, and veggies... I am still currently losing between 3-5 lbs per week without any extra exercise regimen. This diet works even if you bend the rules a bit. My husband and I think that we could actually eat like this as a life change, the food is delicious (my daughters actually love all the rice recipes and homemade fries/ the turkey patties and steamed veggies)... I absolutely LOVE this diet! I have tried everything from sweating to the oldies, south beach, atkins etc. This is the only diet that has helped me lose weight besides the 2 years that I was a vegetarian... I think it's important to find a diet that works well for you and your lifestyle... For my husband and I, Michael Thurmond is the best solution...

I have been recently diagnosed with both thyroid and adrenal gland diseases. Does anyone have either of these issues and still found this program to be successful?

I have been diagnosed recently with a thyroid disease and have been told that due to this, a practically non-functioning adrenal gland system and poor eating habits are the reasons for my weight. Does anyone suffer from the above mentioned disease? If so, has the program worked for you? I am the queen of "try every diet and own every diet book/cookbook." I appreciate your honest answers.

The only one that worked fro me.... (Reply to this comment)
by msengineer
I have lost 70 lbs using this program! I have tried dozens of other programs over the last 10+ years, and none worked like this. And I was equally committed to those programs as I was to this one. But the others produced such slow results that I got tired of feeling deprived for such unimpressive progress. The Six Week Body Makeover was a little tough to get used to (no salt, sugar, oil, etc) but the pounds dropped off so quickly that it was worth the effort. After a week or so my tastes adjusted and I began to really enjoy the food. And it's a lot of food! I found myself thinking "It's time to eat again already?"

I have noticed that several people did not like the fact that you need to cook your own food items. I absolutely HATE to cook but managed to come up with a system of preparing food for this program that is completely bearable. I spend Sunday afternoon making all of my food for the entire week. I either bake or grill chicken and fish, steam some veggies, make rice or bake potatoes, and cut up some fruit. I put everything into individual portion-sized containers (or sandwich bags) and stick it all in the fridge. That's it for the week! It takes a couple of hours at most, including clean-up.

Another huge benefit of this program - I feel fantastic! And my hair, skin, and nails are in amazing condition. After I had been on the program about a month, people weren't just complimenting me on my weight loss, but on my beautiful skin as well. I have lots more energy now, and this energy developed soon after I started the program. I really haven't stuck to the exercise program, but I've still had great results.

I would still like to lose another 25 pounds. But I plan to contnue with these same general eating habits even after I reach my goal. I feel way too good now to risk messing it up by eating crap again! Yes, this program takes some effort and requires you to change some habits, but it is SO worth it! Take it from someone who has tried darn near everything (and spent countless $$$$) - there are no short-cuts, no easy fixes. Losing weight takes effort! But sometimes even with a lot of effort you don't get results. This program delivers real results if you put in the effort! It is the best money I have ever spent!!!

I ordered the Michael Thurmond's Six Week Body Makeover 5 weeks ago and still have not received it. I have placed 5 calls to them asking why I haven't received it. The answer is always the same. It is on back order. Funny how they are continuing to run the info commercials stressing how it will be sent out in 3 business days. A might bit of false advertising I would say. So, if you are planning on starting this before the holidays (which year is only a guess) I would definately order now--just in time for the holidays--maybe 2021!!!!

You Can Do This On Your Own (Reply to this comment)
by riceroni
This program is simply applying common sense principles. You can really do this on your own without having to spend $120. From my experience with someone I know personally who did order this, Sugarprincess is right. I have to admit though I did get back in the gym and put to use the membership I was paying for not using. But I seasoned my food the way I wanted cut out sweets altogether and applied portion control and ate 6-8 meals a day. I dropped 40 lbs. in 5 weeks. I'm not going to call this program a scam because it does work, but if you're going to pay $120 for a common sense approach to nutrition and exercise, then send it to me! I'd be happy to tell you what you already know. If they could box up some dedication, discipline, will, and drive and sell that, it would be worth any price.

Yea, maybe it is water that i've lost, but ya gotta start somewhere, right? And it has'nt even been a whole week yet. So far, so good! I will definately be sticking with it, if i can lose 7 lbs. in 4 days?...then how much more can i lose??? Great Program (Reply to this comment)
by motopinion
In 2007, a relative had purchased the Six Week Body Makeover program and shared it with me and another relative that I live with.

My Experience
When I started the program, I weighted 335lbs. I was taking 3 blood pressure medications. Within the first two weeks, I lost about 15 to 20 pounds. I went to my doctor and she took me off of two of my blood pressure medications because of the lower level just from removing the sodium. I did not exercise at all. I occasionally added some salt to my meals (not recommended) and would eat a small bag of potato chips (Lays .99 bag). I would have lost more if I strictly followed the diet. I am a male. I, within 5 months, eating as I described, dropped below 300lbs.

I stopped using the program and gained the weight back over time, no fault of the program, just my not changing my behavior.

My relative (female) lost 34 pounds in, I think, one month. The other relative (female) that I live with has in 2 years, lost about 100lbs.

She cooks without salt and I don't even notice anymore. I adjusted.

Getting Started
There is a lot of material in the package. The best way to get started is the "Quick Start" DVD. It will give the theory of the program and point to items that you need to start right away.

One,do the body type test. This you can do online without buying the program. Read some of the book, again theory and it talks about food for your body type which is very important. An example for my body type, I have to avoid breads and pasta. I noticed this even on other diets, that those food will cause me to maintain or gain weight. This program is body specific to help you lose weight.

The Recipes
If you go into the website for the plan, there are great resources including chat rooms and message boards where you can communicate with people who have succeeded and who are going through the same struggle that you are. There are great recipes there that show you how to prepare your meals.

The Plan
The theory of the plan is to remove salt and sugar from your diet. It reoommends making your own condiments (NOT hard to do, it just takes a little time - literally minutes). This is because the produces that you purchase in the store are loaded with sugar and lots of sodium. Your meats should be fresh for the same reason. You will have a challenge finding some meats without sodium and you might have to just accept it being there but try to minimize it.

Exercise is recommended (minimal) but optional.
The program has a body shaping DVD for you to pinpoint specific parts of your body that you would like to tone. The exercises take about five minutes depending on her many parts you are working on. Cardiac exercise, no more then a few minutes or just walking at a good pace for about 15 minutes.

Anyone who has been over weight for any amount of time realizes that it is a challenge to change your eating behavior. That must change, your behavior towards food. If you spend your life as many of we overweight people do living only to put food in our mouth, to stimulate the pleasure senses, your chances of successfully losing weight is slim to none. Take up meditating, Youtube has some great videos that will help. Search Spring Forest Gigong on Youtube for good ones. Take up Tai Chi or Yoga. Many Community Colleges have these classes in their Continuing Education Programs for less than $100 for 12 weeks. Some Public Schools have these programs in their Adult Education Programs, again for less than $100. Over Eaters Anonymous is a great program. You can look them up in White Pages on the internet. You will adjust to the lack of salt and learn to use other spices to make the food take better. The amount of sugar removed from your diet also depends on your body type. I think that this program is the best out there next to Weight Watchers and less expensive (no paying to attend meetings).

I cut alot of corners and it still worked for me (Reply to this comment)
by catandra
Hello I came across this thread and I had to post. I have been on the 6wbmo for about 4 weeks and have found it to be a great program and I have cut alot of corners on the plan.

I too found the food to be a bit bland but there are many thing I have tried to spice it up.

I am a type A and I have oatmeal for breakfast which I liked oatmeal before so it wasn't a big problem but just with cinnamon was a bit bland so I added approx. 1/8tsp of brown sugar not to sweeten but to take off some of the edge and it worked. I have to small childre 4 months and 2yrs old so planning meals is a bit much so what I did was I purchased the precooked chicken breast by butterball and success precooked premeased 1/2 cups of brown rice that takes just 1 min in the microwave and the only thing I cook is my vegetables and I often just make a salad and that last a few days. I buy all my fruit fresh and pre-cut it on sundays and boil about 2 dozen eggs for the week (since I average about 4 eggs whites a day if not more) and have a bottle of water with each meal and snack and I am good to go. When I feel like I need something different I use the recipe forums and have also brought the makeover america cook book and I love it.

Even though I cut alot of corners on the plan I feel that I can since I excersie at least 1hr daily. I have already lost 25lbs and about 15 inches over my body in the past 4 weeks and I am so excited about my progress my clothes that I was waiting to get into after having my son are now becoming baggy and sagging my friend and family are even noticing my weight loss and although from looking at me it doesn't seem like I have it to spare I still would like to lose 60-70 more lbs or fit in to a dress size 7 which ever comes first.

I feel great and I am starting to look great and it all thanks to this program.

It will work and as I have said you can cut some corner and excerise and still get excellent results but you just got to try what do you have to lose but weight anything will work but you have got to do the work.

interesting reviews (Reply to this comment)

I happened across this web site looking for the six week body plan. You have probably lost all the weight you have wanted to lose and you may not have the plan anymore. I just wanted to give you a perspective from someone who has HBP(high blood pressure). I had to learn how to eat with no salt, butter, low sodium, and little cheese or no cheese. In reference to breakfast, egg- beaters or great to use. You can find low fat or fat free cheese. As far as seasoning food. Those people who wrote reviews gave some good tips for seasoning everyday bland food. Here is another tip I learned from my chef friend. Use accent on green veggies and get granulated or powdered seasonings and make your own unique blend of seasoning and you can add a pinch of the fake salt( no salt) that I have had to use for years. Good Luck with the weight lost.
