Thanks for your comments. Let me address a few of the points you've raised....

[[ I wanted to swap batteries and BANG all my data vanished from the unit. This happens every time you change the battery and you have to go through a full reload. ]]

Many of us experienced this when we first got our phones, but now it seems to have gone away. I can tell you for certain that this is *NOT* the case with all I300's ... perhaps you received a defective one.

[[ I haven't found a solution for my need to dial a "1" before any number, because in my area all calls need to be dialed as long-distance - so I can forget my address book for the dialing part. ]]

Why can't you simply prefix all of your phone numbers in your address book with a 1? I haven't tried this, but it seems to me as though it should work. It is odd, however, since I've never had to "dial 1" on the Sprint network anywhere I've used it. Just the 10 digit has always worked for me for the past 2-3 years.

[[ There doesn't seem to be any technical support for the phone/PDA either. Sprint CS doesn’t even know the unit. ]]

Even if they did, their support would probably be horrible anyway - they can't get even the most simple request handled correctly. Samsung CS seems to be acceptable so far. The rest just comes with the territory of owning a bleeding-edge device.

[[ Looking up a contact in a large address book is a pain: there are no tabs for say abc/def/ghi etc. to directly get to the part you are aiming at. ]]

My solution to this is to put all of the numbers that I used most often into a special category I call "AccessQuick". I press the phone button, and it switches to the phone app in the "All" group. I press the phone button again, and it changes to the first category which is "AccessQuick". After that, I use the one-handed dial techniques documented in the manual.

[[ The display goes on standby during a conversation ]]

Yes, it does. If it didn't, your batteries would die in no time. You don't need to have the screen on while you're holding the phone to your ear.

[[ there is no redial button ]]

Press TALK twice to redial the last number dialed. Same behavior as on Samsung's other phones.

Hey Dtoombs,

I just bought the I300 myself and I have to admit that I find it to be a nice innovation, although there remains a lot to wish for.

I'm missing a little criticism in your review. For example, I wanted to swap batteries and BANG all my data vanished from the unit. This happens every time you change the battery and you have to go through a full reload. UNACCEPTABLE! This makes the second battery worthless when you are on the road. Also, I haven't found a solution for my need to dial a "1" before any number, because in my area all calls need to be dialed as long-distance - so I can forget my address book for the dialing part. There doesn't seem to be any technical support for the phone/PDA either. Sprint CS doesn’t even know the unit. Looking up a contact in a large address book is a pain: there are no tabs for say abc/def/ghi etc. to directly get to the part you are aiming at. The stylus really sticks to its unit and plays hard to get. The display goes on standby during a conversation, there is no redial button, I could go on and on.

I really hope they are going to come up with a thorough upgrade for all these shortcomings. I think, I’ll write a review about it, just so these problems become more public. For me, this unit isn’t worth more than 3 stars right now.

Cheers,

Re: If not Sprint, When Verizon (Reply to this comment)
by dtoombs
I've heard "end of the year" for Verizon as well - but have never felt the need to confirm that as I've been happy with sprint for the last 2 years.

You may want to check the pdabuzz.com "Smart phones" board - lots of chatter there around carriers, phones, etc.
