The Bottom Line Bottom Line: If you want a quick, inexpensive buzz, This is a nice alternative. It would be great for parties featuring sports on TV.
Pros: 9.5 abv, $1.29 for a 16.9oz bottle, $.99 on sale Cons: Not much taste, although it’s not unpleasant. I’ve had Zhiguly Grand 9.5 on occasion, having seen it in a local market that has a sizeable Russian clientele. I knew the 9.5 stood for abv, and sometimes what I need is a quick, easy buzz, hopefully achieved in a pleasant manner. So, I got a pizza bialy from my local bagel spot, pulled the 16oz bottle out of the fridge and settled in to watch my beloved Chicago Bears. The label says that this is brewed at the Gubernija Brewery in Lituania. It comes in a green bottle. The Open and Nose Not much of a carbonation sound or bubbles upon open. It has a mild hop aroma. The nose itself is mild, with nothing else identifiable. The Pour Golden yellow color, moderate head that subsided fairly quickly. The Taste Not a beer taste, more like malt liquor, really, particularly with a heavy body and modest taste. The carbonation is faint at best. The abv is immediately recognizable, there is light sweetness but not much else. Near the end of the glass, a little more hop and a marginal taste of fruit. It’s not unpleasant, it’s just not much taste, except for the alcohol. The aftertaste Basically the same – a little hop, light sweetness, marginal taste of fruit., and a quick, pleasant buzz. This would go well with stronger foods. The pizza bialy went down easy and I think this could go well with pizza, strong meats and cheeses, sandwiches and the like. This would be great for pizza with the guys while watching a sporting event on big screen TV. So, I can recommend this. I’ve only seen it at markets that have a Eastern European clientele, so look around and give it a try. Thanks for reading. God Bless.
