Baltica #6 will help me enjoy what may be the only time in my life

Oct 22 '05

The Bottom Line Subtle but nice-tasting dark beer, with a high abv and a moderate price. Worth finding and drinking.

That my White Sox are in the World Series. I am at a comfortable distance from my big screen TV. I have already forgotten how the Penn State Nittany Lions are trashing my Illini over on ESPN 2. So, I have another one of my 16 oz. high Iron Curtain high abv beers.

This one is Baltica #6, a dark porter with a reported 7.0 abv. It is brewed and bottled by Baltica Brewery, St. Petersburg, Russia. It comes in a brown bottle.

The Nose There is a nice woosh upon opening, indicating at least SOME carbonation.. There is a slight malt aroma.

My White Sox just hit a homer.

The Pour A great long-lasting head. The beer is a very dark brown. This was a much better pour than the Zhiguly 9.5 beer I reviewed last Sunday.

The Taste Malty, but not overly so, slightly sweet, with a bit of caramel. There is a slight taste of sweetness with a little bit of fruit, maybe pear. There’s not much of a carbonation taste, despite the head.

The Astros just tied it up.

The AftertasteThe malt is what lingers, the slight sweetness subsides into a faint bitterness. There also is a slight buzz.

On balance, this was a much more enjoyable beverage than the Zhiguly. I tend to like dark beers, and this is quite subtle but unmistakably representative of style. Well wrth buying at $1.29 for 16.09 oz. I’ve seen this in markets with a Russian clientele but I’ve also seen it in mainstream liquor stores, too.

My White Sox are up 4-3, after several distractions for myself.

You need to be careful about the numbers for Baltica. Baltica has a higher abv ale, Baltica #9, and others, too, all identified by number. I’ve tried most of them. This is the best tasting by far.

I recommend this as an enjoyable, reasonably priced dark beer.

Thanks for reading. God bless!
