Imagine booking a romantic 40th birthday trip with your partner and then finding that your hotel room was furnished with BUNKBEDS!!!
Until recently I had used HotelClub often with only a few problems (not cancelling rooms when I had cancelled etc). However I recently had an experience that has put me off ever using them again, and I think it is useful to share as it covers a 'policy' that they do not explicitly state on their website.
I booked a double room in a hotel, carefully checking that the bedding configuration options included 'double bed'. When I contacted the hotel to ask independently if they could ensure a double as it was for a romantic holiday, the hotel told me that the rate booked by hotelclub did not cover a double room, it covered only a room with bunk beds!!
Now, I am aware that the T&Cs state that the actual bedding configuration cannot be guaranteed because it depends on the hotel's availability on the day, but in this case there was no way I was ever going to get the configuration I had booked and paid for, because hotelclub had advertised the room rate incorrectly! As far as the hotel was concerned, the room that had been booked by the agency (hotelclub) was a bunkbed room, despite the fact that hotelclub had charged me for a double bedroom!
I contacted hotelclub customer services to ask them to sort it out (the bedding configurations definitely didn't include the possibility of bunk beds!!) and the response I got was:
"when booking a ‘Double’ room, this means that bedding will be supplied for 2 persons, and not that a Double Bed will be provided. In a Double Room, one could expect to receive bedding such as 1 Double Bed, 1 Queen Bed, 1 King Bed, 2 Single Beds, 1 Sofa Bed, 1 Bunk Bed, 2 rollaway beds, etc".
Now some of you may find this acceptable, especially if the room rate is low enough. However this policy is not made clear on the hotelclub website so I thought I would share it with you in case you get caught out. My recommendation would be to check with the actual hotel and not simply 'trust' the agency!
