Could this be the night? Baltika #4 review...YES IT IS!
Oct 26 '05
The Bottom Line A drinkable, moderately priced brew, worth having.
Pros: Remarkably light body for a dark beer; flavorful; modest price
Cons: Their other dark beer is a little better
Well, my White Sox are playing for the sweep and World Series Championship and Im here with another Baltika dark beer, Baltika #4. The label bills it as a dark beer, with abv of 5.6. It is brewed by the Baltika Brewery, St. Petersburg, Russia. It comes in a brown bottle and is available for $1.29 at a local grocery with a Russian clientele.
And, yes, I checked to see if this is in the database before I put a review in the hard to find category.
The Nose Even with the lighter abv (Baltika #6 is 7.0) the nose is a much stronger aroma of malt.
The Pour The color is more dark amber than the darker #6, with a larger and longer lasting head.
The Taste A fairly light body, slightly sweet, with flavors of bread and unspecified (mixed?) fruit. The finish has a more noticeable bitterness than #6. Like #6, not much carbonation in the taste, despite the head.
The Aftertaste The flavors and bitterness increase slightly; the sweetness subsides. Not as much of a buzz.
This is an enjoyable beer, although I prefer the higher abv and heaviness of #6. My wife likes this better, because she likes beers with a lighter body. Evan though she has no use for my beloved IPAs, she is ok with the modest bitter finish.
This would be a very versatile beer with food. It could handle spicy food and snacks and would be ok with meat entrees, cold cuts, salty snacks and cheese, although I personally would prefer #6 with a steak dish.
So, for me, #6 remains the Baltika champion, but this is enjoyable and my wife likes to share it, always a plus
I would give this drinkable beer 4*s if I could.
It's scoreless in the 4th inning. #4 is gone. Maybe the Astros will be later.
The game is over, the season is over and my White Sox are CHAMPS. The only championship remaining for me is for my Illini. My guy Bruce Weber will see that it happens in the NCAA Basketball Tourney.
Thanks for reading. God bless!
