I bought a refurbished computer from an eBay seller a year ago. Although I rarely buy any kind of extended service policy, I decided to go with the Square Trade warranty that was recommended by the seller. Boy, am I glad I did!
A few days ago the computer simply stopped working. I did my best to get it going, including plenty of research on the web. The undeniable conclusion was that there was a hardware problem. Oddly, I had forgotten about the warranty, and was thinking about how I was going to repair or replace the computer. Then my brain engaged and I remembered the warranty. At first I was thinking that I had missed my chance because it was over a year since I made the purchase. But then I checked the terms of the warranty and realized that coverage started 60 days after the purchase and lasted for a full year after that, so I was covered!
I was happy with that realization, but still cautiously optimistic about whether they would make things right. After all, can you trust a company that offers service policies over the web?
I placed a claim using their web site on a Sunday evening. They said it could take one or two business days to process the claim. Lo and behold, I had a response by Tuesday morning telling me that I was covered, and had to send them an affidavit stating that the product was in fact non-functional and that it had not been the victim of any physical damage. I sent the fax with that information. By Wednesday morning I had received confirmation that I would be receiving the entire original purchase price of the computer via my PayPal account. At this point, I still have the computer, which is now mine to do with as I wish.
Bottom line: in less than three working days, the entire claim process had been handled to my great satisfaction. More amazing is that this occurred during the three business days before Christmas, which is bound to be a busy time for them.
Contrary to my initial concerns, this is a business that delivers what it promises quickly and professionally. I was so pleased that I purchased a warranty on a refurbished xBox 360 that I just bought. I hope I don't need the coverage, but with the history of 360 failures, I feel much better with this coverage. I'm confident that, if I need coverage, they'll be there for me.
