Bedtime Stories
Director: Adam Shankman (Hairspray 2007) Release: December 25, 2008 Genre: Comedy Studio: Walt Disney Rating: PG
Bedtime Stories is a movie the family can see without the parents feeling nervous. Where Marley & Me failed to deliver as a comedy this film packs a punch. There are some innuendos and a little bit of foul language. Otherwise, this film sticks closely with the PG rating.
It was nice to see the actors do so well in their roles and with each other. Adam Sandler definitely outdid himself on this one! Courteney Cox was believable as a school principal. Both Laura Ann Kesling and Jonathan Morgan Heit were adorable.
Bedtime Stories was fun to watch. At a few points in the movie even the kids in the audience cheered individually. The audience laughed at several appropriate times during the film. As people exited the theater the mood was upbeat and light (as you would expect from a comedy). Kids especially will like it.
A couple of times the Bedtime Stories plot drags. Adults will find some of the lines to be predictable. The humor is silly but works for kids. Parts of the movie (such as Sandler getting kicked) don't seem to fit. But, it is a film about kids using their imagination for a bedtime story. Anyone who has ever told a story to a kid will know that what kids say doesn't always fit the story. For the most part the plot flowed with logical order even though it was written to be over the top.
This is not a film you have to think about or analyze. It's a pretty good comedy and a fun 100 minutes. It is not thought provoking or deep. Bedtime Stories is just fun.
SPOILER ALERT - The following synopsis will reveal plot details.
Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) grew up in the Nottinham Hotel wish his sister Wendy (Courteney Cox) when it was owned and operated by his father Marty Bronson (Jonathan Pryce). Later, the motel was sold to Barry Nottingham (Richard Griffiths). At the time of the sale Nottingham and Marty entered into a verbal agreement that if Skeeter showed aptitude he could run the hotel. That didn't happen.
Early in the film Skeeter is asked by Wendy to watch her two children. The school where she works is being torn down and she has a job interview. It's out of town and she's stuck with no one to watch her children. Skeeter agrees to watch Bobbi (Laura Ann Kesling) and Patrick (Jonathan Morgan Heit) at night even though he doesn't know them.
As Skeeter tells the nightly bedtime story, both of the children interrupt by makin their own storyline changes The next day, the suggestions the children made start happening to Skeeter. The results are hilarious!
Finally, Skeeter is given his golden opportunity. He, and nemesis rival Kendall (Guy Pearce), each get to present a proposal on a theme for the new hotel Mr. Nottingham wants. The winner will run the hotel.
Does Skeeter win? What about the kids?
