HIIII-LARIOUS! It's a beautiful thing when I have low expectations and I'm pleasantly surprised. I've been a Jim Carrey fan since his Vera deMilo and Fire Marshall Bill days, but his last few turns at the box office were not very impressive. ....sooo, i was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this film.
SOME MINOR DETAILS HERE
"Yes Man" is directed by Peyton Reed and stars Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel, with Bradley Cooper as best friend, Peter, and a hilariously funny Rhys Darby as Norman.
The story is simple and yes, probably a bit predictable but still fun. A bored, boring junior loan office (Carrey), Carl Allen is divorced from his very hot wife of 6 months (played by Molly Sims) and just coasting along avoiding friends and life in general.
He runs into an old acquaintance, Nick (John Michael Higgins) who invites him to a YES SEMINAR run by Terrence Bundley (Terence Stamp) who in a creepy L.Ron Hubbardish way convinces Carl to make a covenant to say YES to everything. If he doesn't keep the covenant bad things will happen. By saying yes he opens up a whole new world, things go well at work, he meets an amazing, quirky girl (Zooey Deschanel), and he starts having fun.
He has a few hilarious adventures along the way that had me laughing so loud it embarassed my teenager. (not a difficult task) Even though I've seen quite a few of the funny clips in trailers there were many more to enjoy, they didn't spoil all of the fun in advance.
Deschanel as Allison is quirky and fun, and her singing voice is amazing even if her band "Munchausen By Proxy" and the songs are kind of weird.
Carrey is looking his age in this movie, a little old for Deschanel in my opinion, but he's still got the comic timing and silly nature that I love.
Rhys Darby as Carl's needy pathetic boss, Norman was a new face for me and I kind of enjoyed him. He reminded me of Austin Powers but his Australian accent and usage of slang terms he claimed to have invented were a hoot.
Of course everything can't always come up roses, so there are some rough patches when Allison realizes Carl is only saying "yes" to everything because he has to. She doubts he cares for her and leaves him. Carl confronts Terrence Bundley who admits he made the covenant with him for show because he seemed reluctant to embrace the "yes". He tells Carl that saying yes is just a way to learn to embrace new opportunities but that it's up to him to learn when to say no as well.
It was a good lesson for all of us, that sometimes we have to open up to new opportunities, open that door when you hear a knock. You never know what you could be missing.
If you are a Jim Carrey fan I would recommend this movie. I realize that my comedic tastes are not always the norm, but I thoroughly enjoyed this light-hearted 104 minute romp through Jim Carrey's silly world.
