Spoil Your Neopet! Get Them Their Very Own Petpet!

Nov 01 '05

The Bottom Line There are a lot of things to consider when picking out a petpet but don’t fall for the scams about some of them ....

You might wonder why having a petpet for your Neopet is such a big deal. Well, there are several advantages to having one of these critters attached to your Neopet. The first is that they are great company. They will help your Neopet stay happy and entertained when you can’t give them all the attention that they deserve but if you are going to go away on vacation or not visit the site for a while you may want to check your pet into one of the many places at the NeoLodge. Your pet will be fed, played with and kept happy until you return and for a couple NP a day you can elect to have them visit the grooming parlor, have an en suite bathroom or even hit the burger bar. Another advantage of having a petpet is that you can purchase a paintbrush and paint them a different color or go for a dung, baby or fairie brush to give them a more unique look. There is a contest somewhere at the site that rewards you for having a petpet attached to your pet for a certain period of time. There are also avatars that you can get when you have a certain petpet attached to your pet. A great site to get the scoop on these avatars is Mindless Invalid [www.mindlessinvalid].

Picking out the best petpet is something that you should think about for a while before you rush out and get one. Do you want a spooky one like the Spyder? Cute like a Raindorf? Helpful like the Stopngo? Or do you want to spend a ton of NP and get one of the rarest in Neopia? Everyone knows that the Krawk petpet is one of the most sought after but there is also the Kadoatie - these cost a ton of NP but they are worth it if you want a unique petpet. I have the usual ones for my pets, the one I am most proud of is Mr. Scary who just hit level three after visiting Termuculus and waking him up but he managed to escape without getting eaten. If you are going to hit the Battledome you will want to get a petpet that is going to be able to help you out. Sadly, this isn’t an area that I go into very often, most of the time I go there when I want to get an avatar or someone challenges me to a battle.

Where To Buy Your Petpet

Some people are going to want to check the auction house before they start looking to buy a petpet from a shop; you might be able to trade for one of the more rare petpets to so look in the Trading Post and use the search function to see if there are any up for grabs. Here is a nice starter list of shops that sell petpets; these are restocked about the same time as the regular shops but you may have to sit there for a while and refresh every ten to twenty seconds to get the jump on everyone else. Don’t refresh too often or you might end up with a ‘shop ban’ [this is where you are essentially banned from shops for a certain period of time]. It is also helpful to know the going price of petpets, some of the shops sell them for two to twenty times what they are going for at the site from other players shops so make sure you know the average selling price in shop, on the Shop Wizard, auction and Trading Post before you go to a shop and try to get one there.

[This isn’t a complete list, please visit the Neopets site to see all that are available for purchase, combination or trade]

Please note, some of these petpets can’t be purchased in this form, you have to purchase or obtain two petpets then combine them in the Mixing Pot. Some times it is cheaper to buy one that has already been ‘mixed’ than to try to track down two petpets for a cheap price. Be sure to check outside sites for combinations that you can create from two different petpets.

Prices

It is almost impossible to put a price on a petpet, some start for as little as 2,000 NP [Spyder, Cobrall] and some are in the millions because of their rarity. It is all in the supply and demand of the site and which ones are being used for an avatar. Take the Angelpuss for example, beside being the first petpet created at the site it was used to get an avatar at one point in time. All you had to do was attach one to a pet then view your look up to get the avatar. Some avatars can be obtained by having a petpet attached for a certain amount of time or viewing the lookup of a player that has a petpet [sometimes a petpetpet] attached to their pet. Like I said, check sites like Mindless Invalid for the latest scoop on avatars that come from viewing lookups. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a painted petpet than to buy a petpet then a paintbrush but these are things to consider after you have priced both of them. Dung and some color paint brushes are inexpensive but you also have to keep in mind that seasonal ones like the winter and holiday ones go up in price a few times a year.

Slorgs are a great petpet to have, I just painted mine with a dung paintbrush and picked that up for about 3,500 NP. Necessity dictated that I have a petpet that wasn’t in one of the lodges so I could feed it some type of food with the word “garlic” in it. I had just put three of my pets into a lodge so they could be played with and fed so my Grundo was the lucky pet. He gets hungry often so I have to make sure that I toss him some food or put him in the lodge. The Spyder is pretty cool to have and doesn’t cost a lot, you can paint him with a Christmas brush for a very cool but slightly creepy Christmas pet. Don’t fall for scams when it comes to petpets. Some people will tell you that a certain pet is very rare when it isn’t - don’t go according to the price or rarity level that you see on the pet look up either, these aren’t exactly the most accurate tools at the site. For example, look up some of the potions you get from the Healing Spring; some that are listed as having a value of 2,000 - 3,000 NP sell on the Shop Wizard for 10 - 20 NP. The same thing goes for petpets; if you are going to get a seasonal one be sure to look for them in the off season; don’t go looking for a Devilpuss or Meepit before Halloween because they will be selling for more as people get their shops and pets ready for the holiday.

The ultimate gift for your petpet is of course a petpetpet. A Mootix is something that I’ve always wanted but before I shell out that kind of money for one I want to make sure it is something that my pet and petpet are going to enjoy. There are a lot of people out there that are just looking to rip you off - some will tell you that a petpet is rare or that you can get some secret avatar with it. Do your research before you make a purchase because the Neopet Team won’t be able to help you get your NP back if you buy something for an obscene amount of NP without proof that the person did indeed scam you or give you false information about a trade or something in an auction. Just because something says that it is rare on the user look up doesn’t necessarily mean that it is rare, that is just how things are classified at the site.

The Bottom Line

Resist the temptation to just snap up the first petpet that you come across. Some are better to have when you are going to hit the Battledome, some will give you a new avatar, some will be better friends to your Neopet than others. When I first started out at the site I wanted a Candy Vampire more than anything else, now that it’s been attached for more than a year [I think], there isn’t a lot that I can do with it but I hate to get rid of it because it’s at level three and my pet has had it for so long. These are things to consider when picking out a petpet - can it be painted or morphed with a potion, will it give you an avatar, will it get along with your pet, is it rare and will it help you in wars and at the Battledome. That is a lot of stuff to think about before you get a petpet so be sure to ask other older players at the site for advice if you see that they have the same Neopet that you
have. Above all else, remember that your petpet is there to keep your pet happy but you still have to feed it and play with it. Your Neopet can’t die but it sure can get unhappy if you don’t show it some attention.

As always, thanks for the read!
