Ultimately, the decision should be up to the parents.

I'm sorry to hear about the trauma you and your son went through and I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get to make your own decision. My son was born premature and a circumcision was not recommended when he was born. He had one at 2 months of age though and I doubt that it was any more traumatic than if it had been done at 2 days old. The person who did the proceddure had no problems about doing it at that age either.

This sounds very traumatic for everyone involved. (Reply to this comment)

I am very glad to hear that your son made it into the world and is sounding like he's growing up into a strong, lively boy. I find the entire circumcision debate rather over the top -- can anyone honestly remember what happens when they're a week old? I would have pushed, if I had been fortunate enough to have children, but then, my religious traditions demand that a son be circumcized, so I guess I'm coming at it from an odd angle. -- Telynor

Thanks for sharing your experience. I spent most of my pregnancy debating whether my son should be circumcised and at every step of MY way, people were pushing for it. I did end up having the procedure done, but I find it surprising that your doctors weren't as gung-ho about it. Although I agree that you should've had more say in the decision, it is refreshing to hear that some doctors aren't pushing the procedure as much these days. A friend of mine has to bring her son to have him recircumcised when he reaches one because the original surgery didn't remove enough skin and it closed up. So I'm also surprised that the doctors refused when your son was still an infant. This must've been so frustrating for you and your family.
