| nibor's Full Review: The Dark Knight |
My name is Robin and I was born in 1963. I don't think there is any way I could have grown up without loving the Batman and Robin TV show. Heck, the main character was named after me. Because of this, I was quite happy when the Batman movies started coming out.
Unfortunately, as a grown up, I don't really like science fiction/fantasy movies all that much. The first bunch of batman movies were okay although I found them dark and not all that appealing. Then, Batman Begins came out and I absolutely loved it. The story was compelling and the characters were great so I was really looking forward to this type of movie again when I watched The Dark Knight.
The Dark Knight is directed by Christopher Nolan who also directed Batman Begins so I had reason to be hopeful but all in all, I finished the movie totally dissatisfied with the experience.
This movie involves The Joker played by Heath Ledger. This character was definitely the most outstanding part of the movie. I had heard how Heath Ledger's performance was extraordinary but being a skeptic, I didn't expect to actually see that for myself. I was wrong. The Joker was one of the best bad guy characters I've ever seen. He was human and inhuman and truly scary. The makeup artist did a fantastic job.
I also enjoyed Michael Caine's performance as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox. Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne was quite charming as well.
I didn't enjoy Christian's performance as Batman. He was too robotic and the voice didn't fit my image of how Batman should sound. I would prefer Batman to speak with a human voice.
Maggie Gyllenhaal played Rachel Dawes and other than being pretty, she didn't really add too much to the movie. I didn't care if she ended up with Harvey Dent or Bruce Wayne.
Aaron Eckhart did a good job as D.A. Harvey Bent. I did find myself rooting for him. Gary Oldman was good as Lieutenant Gordon although I wasn't too upset when he was killed. I didn't even feel too badly for his wife and children when they were told. Hopefully this is because the movie just wasn't all that well-written rather than me being cold-hearted.
I had trouble figuring out who the bad guys were and what Lau (played by Chin Han) had to do with any of them. Something about money. The movie had too many characters. I had trouble figuring out who were the good guys and who were the bad guys and I didn't really care of any of the good citizens of Gotham were killed or saved.
The special effects in the movie were good. There was lots of breaking glass and explosions. I jumped at one point when a body unexpectedly appeared in a window.
I should mention that the movie is 152 minutes. That would explain why I didn't think the movie was ever going to end. I definitely recommend watching this at home so you can pause for breaks.
All in all, I'm glad they're still making Batman movies but I hope the next one has an easier storyline to follow. It would be nice if Robin would return, too.
