The Bottom Line These are the comedies I have seen that still have the power to make me laugh, even though I know all the jokes by heart.
I was born in 1964, and started to watch movies about 6 years after that. Anyway, here is my very hard to compile list of some of the funniest comedies I have seen in my lifetime (thus far, I'm not dead yet) Coming in at Number ten: Ten: Office Space (1999) Director Mike Judges' comedy about the bleakness of office work gets funnier with every viewing. I didn't even recognize Stephen Root (actor best known as Jimmy James from TVs News Radio) as the unfortunate Milton the first few times I watched it. Did you get the memo about the TPS reports? Which Michael Bolton song is your favorite? Oh Im just gonna have to say all of them! Nine: Dumb and Dumber (1994) Ah yes, how can we have a list of comedies without the Farelly Brothers. There haven't been any Farrelly brothers that didn't make me laugh, but this one starring rubber faced Jim Carrey was their first venture in outrageous stupid comedy. It is also in my book, their second funniest film. Wow two lucky guys are gonna tour the country with the Swedish bikini team. Yeah, I'd like to be those guys! Kevin Smith has always made me laugh and his final movie about two slackers from New Jersey come in at number: Eight - Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001) For those who saw Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma, Kevin Smith gives us a movie that exploits every in joke he can think of from those films. Ben Affleck and Matt Damons self parody sequel to Good Will Hunting alone is worth the admission, but the addition of scenes of what we suspected all along about the Scooby Doo Mystery Van, and filthy jokes too numerous to count, made this one a must own for fans of Kevin Smith. Do you remember when Eddy Murphy was funny? I do, and funnier than 48 hours, funnier than Beverly Hills Cop was this comedy classic I put at number: Seven - Coming to America (1988) Eddy Murphy with friend Arsenio Hall about a Prince and his assistance (and several other characters in the movie) coming to New York City to find the prince a bride, without resorting to using his Royal title. From a cameo by none other than Samuel L. Jackson to a king played with appropriate royal presence by James Earl Jones, Coming to America, in my opinion was Eddy Murphys best comedy in the days when he made comedy. Michael Cain provided the perfect upper class grifter foil to Martins low brow con man in the south of France in my comedy at number: Six: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) Steve Martin demonstrates what he does best, physical comedy and facial expressions. Who could see this film and forget Prince Rupert the Monkey Boy May I go to the bathroom? What do we say Rupert? May I go to the bathroom pleeaasseee! Yes you may Rupert. Martin does not move from his chair, but from his priceless facial expression.... Owen Wilson makes me laugh, so does Ben Stiller, so the two of them are in number: Five: Meet the Parents (2000) Bent nose Owen Wilson's role as Christian architect Kevin Rawley in itself was a riot, but when you foil Ben Stillers natural paranoia and low self esteem against uber cool confident Robert DeNiro as his possible future father-in-law, well, I saw this one twice at the theaters, and many times thereafter on DVD Cats don't have opposable thumbs Greg I have nipples Greg, can you milk me? Billy Bob Thorton as an alcoholic child hating Santa Claus alone is reason enough to put this next comedy at number: Four: Bad Santa (2003) Billy Bob is Santa, an acerbic foul mouthed midget is an elf out to rob department stores blind each holiday season. Throw in comic performances by John Ritter (sadly his last) and even a funny Bernie Mac into a movie that gleefully breaks every holiday movie stereo type, while being boldy offensive, and policitally incorrect and you have a comedy that will have you doubled over. A classic Santa moment with Billy Bob Thorton. A young child sees Santa eating lunch and approaches with his mom. Santa retorts: I'm on my F**king Break! OKAY! They just don't make Santas like Billy Bob! Trey and Parker have become very good at in your face rude satirical humor. However it was not Trey and Parker's movie South Park, Bigger Longer and Uncut, that made my list, no it was a movie about PUPPETS! that makes number: Three: Team America - World Police (2004) This was probably one of the baudiest, offensive policitally incorrect movies, well, since the previous years Bad Santa. However, it was also side splittingly funny. You will either leave the theater in disgust, or you will double over clutching your stomach and see the film twice to see all the scenes you missed from laughing so hard. The new world order is Inebitadble! What? Inebidable! What are you saying? The staying power alone gives this next movie my number two spot for the funniest comedy of all time. Two: Blues Brothers (1980) Dan Akroyd and John Belushi of Saturnday Night Live fame! Guest appearances by everyone from John Candy, Carrie Fisher, Twiggy, Frank Oz, Paul Reubens and even Joe Walsh (one of the prisoners in the ending sequence - thanks IMDB, I never noticed him before) And who can forget the classic soundtrack that included real life cameos by a who's who of blues musicians including John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, and James Brown. Add the most police cars destroyed in a single film and some of the most memorable car chase scenes in movie history and you have an all time comedy classic. The new Oldsmobile's came in early this year What kind of music do you play here? Oh we have both kinds, Country AND Western The funniest Farelly brothers movie made in my book brings us to number: One: Something About Mary (1998) I can watch Matt Dillon try to sleaze his way into charming Cameron Diaz's life again and again, while befuddled Ben Stiller looks on. Every scene is loaded with laughs that don't lose their appeal with repeat viewings. Even the segue songs are a treat to listen to. Do you have any change , all I've got are these darn Nepalese coins? Architect???, I'm just a pizza delivery boy, who the hell goes to Chile, twice in one year? And who can resist lipsinging along to Sugerpie Honeybunch as the closing credits role? And Many Runner Ups: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) One of the first comedies I truly loved. My college friends and I could annoy others to no end by reciting this movie line for line. This didn't make the top ten list only because I've watched it too many times. A Fish Called Wanda (1988) Ku ku ku Kenny Thatsss.. quite a stutter you've got there! Ah, Kevin Kline as the Neitche misquoting assassin Otto, Jamie Lee Curtis as a clever American girl Wanda, and none other than Monty Pythons Michael Palin as stuttering Ken, and John Cleese as the oh so proper British barrister Archie Leech. This movie for years remained as my favorite funny comedy. A bank robbery gone awry, double crosses and triple crosses, and healthy doses of British humour and physical comedy and verbal wit makes this almost a comedy top ten. The Wedding Singer (1998) Can you sum up the Eighties in One movie? I can, Adam Sandler's The Wedding Singer. Although usually sophomoric, the man who brought us stupidity in the form of Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Water Boy and even ugghh Little Nicky, has redeemed himself with other movies such as 50 First Dates, Anger Management, and this capsule review of everything that was the decade known as the 80s. While making me laugh hysterically, this movie managed to cram in every cliche of that time. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) Steve Martin is a master of physical comedy and facial expressions. Pairing him with the late lovable Canadian comedian John Candy, also adept at physical comedy makes this film not only funny but imbues it with a true sense of charm. I had a dream my hands were between two giant pillows Pillows!, those aren't PILLOWS! 40 Year Old Virgin (2005) Well, just when I stopped laughing at my Team America DVD along comes this movie with Steve Carroll. The premise sounds clichéd and stupid, but Carroll turns what could be a walking stereotype into a real person with real feelings, and ends up giving us a comedy that not only makes us crack up hysterically but also makes us really care about its characters. This isn't on the list, only because its too new, so I don't know how well it will hold up. Thought abouts for top ten: Austin Powers movies, American Pie (the first one), Anger Managment, Me, Myself & Irene, Shrek, and many more.
